Subject: New Years resolutions... sorta

Penn Yan, NY
I’m not real big on New Years resolutions but I do like to try new things every year on the farm.

This year I will be expanding on some trials I did last year with strip tilled brassica cover crops in clover sod. The idea being to seed a deep fibrous rooted cover crop in longer term sod without destroying the clover. This also should increase forage energy levels for our last cutting and loosen the ground.

I’d like to try growing some table beets organically on a field scale. There are some local markets for processing and I’ve been told that it’s hard to do so I’d like to try it.

I will be experimenting further with organic dry edibles planted after a winter triticale forage crop is harvested. We’ve seen strong weed suppression without stunting the beans in black beans and pintos, now want to try kidney beans.

What are other people trying?
