N FLA | I put together a custom grazing deal with a cow BTO this fall. It's coming to fruition this week. As the in-house agronomist I really push for fertilized and cow pooped cover crops. I've got a flat rate per cow per day from the cattleman.
I think it will be about 400 pairs and 500 dry cows/heifers when it's said and done. Should be moving cattle for 2 more weeks. Brought in 280 pairs this week. The cows are mostly Angus or maybe Angus cross, bred to Wagyu bulls. I'll be tickled if I can get 110 days grazing on each farm. On their end, they are working their butts off to get the cattle to us. Its going very well. Forage is 25# of locally grown rye and 75# of farm saved oats. It could have used a touch of ryegrass but I'm trying not to rock the boat too much with the boss.
I am "office staff" at my new gig, or you might call it a professional position. So I'm not out everyday doing farm labor and cutting up with the guys. But I brought along my 16 foot giraffe trailer and half ton truck to haul 20 calves and took all the jokes in stride. Just part of the team as we say.
My winter pasture isn't ready yet, but it's in great condition so far. I haven't fed any hay yet, but the neighbor said he saw one sticking her head through the fence today looking for something to eat.
