What I believe to be one of the best mechanics that ever worked on a John Deere fixed it. It was the timer relay TCA17662. Nobody responded to my question so I assume nobody had an answer, but he did and in case somebody else runs into the problem I'm posting the result.
ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Engine turns over just fine. New battery. Jumped it to get it started with the old battery and it ran about 2 minutes then shut off. Now it has no spark with the new battery and as I said it turns over just fine.
I pulled the plugs to check for spark. Neither has a spark.
This mower always started in a few seconds.
Jumped the seat switch to no avail.
Turn key and pull the PTO and it clicks.
Moved the steering levers in the manner that you would drive and it doesn't turn over.
Put the brake down and it won't turn over.
So it seems all the safety switches are working.
