Manitoba | We got a bunch of rain and snow yesterday and wont get back in field for a while so yesterday pulled exhaust manifold off to replace a leaking exhaust gasket on 504 case engine Can i reuse exhaust manifold studs or do i need to get them out and put new ones in? How about the turbo studs? I got all the nuts off the manifold and with exception of one thats not great most look ok Was hoping to reuse but thought i should ask here Scared i will end up breaking them iff and make more work for myself Thanks

SESD | You could reuse them, if you think they look good, but your chances of one breaking later have gone up now. I replace them every time, just heat the area around the studs, and melt a candle or crayon into the threads, let cool, they should come out easy, may need to heat again. Before doing all that I would try gently to take them out, most of the time if the nuts came off alright, the studs won't be to bad to get out.

Manitoba | Was afraid thats what i would hear Best way to do that? Just double nut and lock them together? Need to run in and get some more oxygen so if someones going to talk me out of replacing them you have about an hour to do so Thanks

White Stone, Virginia | Use a box end wrench and air hammer the end of the stud while you remove it. This guy has the expensive Snap On attachment, but you can do it with a straight punch, two nuts locked on the stud and a box end wrench. Heat never hurts though, especially if the stud is long and the threads ore on the end. If they are long, like on my Case 930, use a stud remover if you can to put the torque up near the block. You should still use the air hammer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wh2TO2ots0 Edited by Rawleigh 10/4/2018 16:33

Texas/New Mexico Stateline | Reused studs on several different diesel engines with no ill effects. My view is if they look decent, there is a greater chance of breaking them off getting them out, than leaving them in.
