Farm in WC Iowa | I want to find out more about water availablity.
Where our farm is in west central Iowa we sit on top of a watershed. We have shallow wells and when we have had 150ish head of cattle we have had to carry water from a different well.
Our main well has water near the surface and can run low on drought years. (fence post holes will have water in the bottom of them) my grandfather has cautioned us about draining the swampy area next to the well as if you drop the water table a foot you can run into concerns with available water.
What can you guys tell me about the likelyhood of deeper water? Across our short section we have plenty of seeps from perched water tables. Does this water make it into a deeper water reserve?
For example we have a few creeks that start at or downhill from our farm that will run from 10 miles up to 50 miles away to dump into larger rivers.
I’m eager to hear more experiences with water availablity at or near the top of a watershed.
