niobrara nebraska | Curious has anyone planted a high protein type "cover" crop into a portion of permanent pasture? What I am talking about is taking 5-10 acres out of grass using temporary fencing and rotating the cattle into it for one day a week on the rotation or something like that. Just trying think of ideas to make our pasture in Nebraska work a little harder to pay the taxes. Some pastures around here where farmland in the past and got planted to brome in the 80's/ early 90's. My thought was to try and have sorghum sudan in one paddock, grazing alfalfa/oats in another, and so on. Try to have one for spring, one for summer, and something that regrows. Already rotate cattle in the pastures. This would make a little more work, but hopefully could gain some calf growth and carrying capacity. | |
