Subject: Well that was disappointing

Western WY
I bought a group of black calves on October 6 at an average weight of 556. Noticed today one of them was a little lame so I ran them into the corrals to treat him and decided to weigh them just to see how they are gaining. They averaged only 1 lb. of gain per day. They currently average 657. Disappointing!

Right now they are getting good quality dry alfalfa in a feeder. They are also getting about 3.75 lbs./head/day of a grain mix that I mix here on site. It has rolled barley, steam flaked corn, ground corn, whole oats, mineral, salt, sodium bicarb and a 36% pellet with Bovatec.

Any suggestions? Is the alfalfa too much for them and they are just pooping it out? Haven't noticed any really loose poop. Not enough grain? Our winter has been very mild here as well.
