| Honestly, i don't brag about any of our equipment, heck i complain about most of it. However Calmer rolls are one of my best purchases. Marion is great to deal with. I have run their bt chopppers on two 893's. The life of them has been longer than they said. Our life has gotten so much better in the fall after spending the money. Been running them for 6 years now I believe. Do yourselves a favor and attend a farm show and spend 5 minutes with Marion, you wont regret it. |

northwest IL Lee Co | I agree. They are very expensive but they work really well. Makes my 30 year old 643 work as well as a new head. I've had them for 5 years, about 3000 acres. Have some wear at the front of the rolls but still work great. |

Central New York | Couldn't agree more I bought mine from him in Louisville 3 years ago. Put them on a 893 as well it's amazing how well they turn the stalks to confetti. I did his complete kit deck plates and all since my head needed a complete rebuild I'll never go back to the originals!!!! |

| I’m at about 780 acres per row, considerable wear at front of rolls but are still performing well. |

| I have no firsthand experience with the calmer rolls. Look like a good, legit product. I saw the demonstration at Louisville, spoke to one of Marion’s right hand men. Had a great conversation.
A concern of mine after seeing these is if the rolls leave a mat of chopped stalk confetti, doesn’t the soil underneath the mat take longer to dry out in the spring versus a standard OEM intermeshing knife roll? Thinking in terms of running a sprayer across corn stalks 2 weeks ahead of soybean planting.
Will the confetti pieces get swept away by either wind or rain like regular chopping head residue?
**Edit** My concerns would be for no-till situations.

Se wisc. | My concern with the Calmer rolls would be the washing and blowing of residue in bunches or low areas or culverts. Have seen this in notill but I guess if you are tilling it is not the issue. |

NW KS/ SC ID | I stopped at their booth at HHD last year, and didnt talk to Mr. Calmer himself, but talked to one of the other guys and I was impressed with their knowledge and solutions for problems with each series of header. |

overlooking Keg creek | my concern when we first made a purchase. Not really a problem here for us in SWIA. Have seen more blowing of shucks and residue with vertical till on occasion. |

SW MN | Same head JD 893, adjusted the speed. called Marion himself, couldn't get it to chop over 3 mph. sold the D....m thing. |

SC Iowa | We have them on a 1293. Year 5 with about 500 acres a row. We need to rebuild the fronts and they will probably go another 500 acres a row. We generally drive less that 3.5 mph and they do a great job chopping. I don't know if they would chop as well at 5 mph or greater, the only reason we have a 12 row is to able to drive slower. |

Central Indiana | I bought a used 893 with them. Night and day improvement over OEM. Have not noticed anymore residue movement than before. Definitely pulls stalks through better than regular rolls. |

The speed the head is running definitely is a factor but the quality of the stalk chopping job definitely decreases as ground speed increases.
We have a 1290 JD head with the chopper rolls on it. It does a pretty good job chopping stalks up to about 4.5 mph, above that and it starts getting pretty ragged. That is with the head drive shafts running ~570 rpm and the head sprockets on direct drive.

| Do they take more horsepower to run? I have a 893 on a 9600, worry about the reverser taking more strain. |

![](/profile/get-photo.asp?memberid=2314&type=profile&rnd=541) Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463 | Last winter John Deere had a video comparing Deere rolls to rolls by Calmer and the 360 Chain Roll.
Of course Deere was the UNDISPUTED WINNER!!
Several things were covered. Cannot really remember them all.
But one test was the draft load.
The 360 chain roll had a much higher load than the Deere or Calmer.
Between Deere and Calmer, I cannot remember who was on top. But it was very close.
Seeing this post, and knowing I have the video bookmarked, I was going to watch it again.
The video is no longer available.
