Eastern Shore of MD | A different way to seed covers.
We are involved in a study comparing early seeded covers by air to ones later seeded.
Mix for study is on ground planned for soybeans in 2018 is:
5 lb crimson clover
4 lb daikon radish
90 lb small grain
We have Three fields split 50% early seeded vs 50% late seeded. Our early was seeded by air in mid sept in standing corn and we are seeding the other half of the fields now after harvest. Study will measure biomass accumulation and leachate as I understand it.
We are hydro seeding the radish and clover mix while broadcasting the small grain and then running a Great Plains turbo till to incorporate.
Pic 1. Seed used
Pic 2 seed mix in a 3.5% clay suspension, no fert included.
Pic 3 using the high rate side of our 4420 with cam lock flood jets on 60" centers to spray a 45 gal rate. #50 tips were too small for the larger radish seed, now using #60 tips and getting along fine.
Pic 4 clover and maybe radish on corn fodder.
Pic 5 showing barley that has been broadcast.
Pic 6 field shot.
Pic 7 the half of the field that was aerial seeded has a good head start.
