North Central Alabama | I have a pin hole in one of the metal hydraulic lines on my tractor.I think the line is mild steel.Instead of buying or renting a tank with 100% Argon can I use the bottle off of my mig welder for this one time little tig job?

south central MN | No it will contaminate the tungsten and weld zone.

Ne Iowa | I've brazed a lot of those with good results.

NW MN | No. I would braze that if I were you. If you are bent on TIG welding it, You could rent a small bottle from your local welding supply place for not much money. I bought a 40 cubic foot cylinder for my TIG as I only use it a few times per year. Bottle and gas was $125 and the full will probably last ten years at the rate I'm going.

nw MN | No. You won't do anything but wreck your torch. CO2 is only semi inert and will allow the tungsten in your torch to oxidize.

SC Kansas | Get a bottle of argon if you have a tig welder. Brazing and Tig welding has both work for me for fixing rubbed lines or fittings as long as it's clean.

S.E. Iowa | Braze it. Many factory lines are brazed to.start with.

Eastern Arkansas | I know this doesn't answer your question, but if you have the line off you can take it to a radiator shop to get brazed and pressure checked. Probably cheaper than getting a bottle of gas.

Faunsdale, AL | Silver solder is a type of brazing. It works just fine if everything is clean. I usually just use flux coated bronze rods. Can do steel that's a little rusty still, cast iron, even copper in a pinch.

Hopkinsville, KY | JB weld won't fix it? We did a hydraulic cooler 25 years ago and it's held. Edited by Drbrown 10/4/2017 20:18

South Dakota | I hate to disagree with you but have you ever been through a place that makes Hyd lines I have? They are ALL Silver soldered. that is when i quit brazing and started Silver solder.
