Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | My grand-dad (1899-1993) farmed all his life.....was out of home and on his own working a threshing crew by age 14. Raised, worked, and showed Belgian draft horses and was quite a guy. One of his sayings, when we'd been dry for a long time and everyone was talking about wishing we'd get a rain, was "By God, it can get wet in a hurry".
Fast forward: as has been well-publicized all summer, our area has been in a "severe" drought. Stuff is pretty much cooked, just waiting on dry-down and leaves to drop to see how much fun harvest is gonna be. Woke up just before 3AM today to the sound of the emergency alert tone on our phones. We're under a flood warning, as the SW part of our county has had 5.3" and still raining. Appears to be about 3" in our gauge here, will be able to tell more after daylight.
Nearly every day gives me a reason to think of Grandpa. |
