Subject: 4430 batteries

Central Texas
Anyone ever convert a 4430 to just one 12 volt battery by the starter? Does the one battery last a decent amount of time? I know several 40's series tractors converted to one battery that do just fine. My 6 volts are weak, and all cables are factory and in need of replacing. Just looking to save a few dollars. Tractor starts very good in warm weather, and fair in cold weather (but batteries are about 3 years old). TIA

I put two 12 volt dry cells in the left battery box on my 4030 and I have no trouble starting even in the dead of winter.  They fit perfectly too.

We go to one big one on 4020's and our 4430, picture isn't the best but if you zoom in you get the idea. Zero problems since doing this, got batteries at Oriellys, they just call them a two man battery

One 12 volt in the original left side battery box has done well for us. Also last several years. Get the higest cca battery to fix the box without modifying. We store chains in the box on right side. Also cranks well in Louisiana winters..

We use one group 31 truck battery 950cca in the battery box beside the starter and made some new very short cables works great even in winter. We have had some go 3 years and longer  ususlly change them out to a old gas tractor andn put the newest in the JDs. We have 3 4430s a 4250 and 2 8820 combines this way we use the stud type post that I really like verus the old clamp style.

Recently switched my 4040 over to a single Group 31 1000 CCA stud type battery, went to short 2/0 ring end cables and installed a disconnect switch. Gave cost breakdown vs. replacing with original batteries and new factory cables. Savings was significant, got rid of specialized expensive cables and got away from cables under cab. Very happy with it so far will see how it performs in colder weather starting.
