Subject: Repair nut for stripped axle spindle threads

Crawfordsville, Arkansas
What are they called and where can I buy them? I've searched every term I can think of and come up empty handed.

I had some years ago. No idea where they came from but they are a 2 part nut. Threaded on the inside to go on a axle spindle then the outer part is threaded also along with it being slotted. The outer nut clamps down on the slotted part and holds it tight to the bad threads. Any idea what the technical term of these is? I can't find a single picture of one. My supply ran out years ago and I need one today.

Try "Thread Restorer". A lot of older mechanics have a set of thread files too. They work great on spindles. J

What do you need it for? Most antique tractor sites have them, Steiners have them in their catalogue, All States AG has them.

Please post back if you find one, and where. I just had a machine shop repair spindle threads with a thread restorer die. Hope there is enough thread now to tighten against bearing if i leave off the washer. Your way sounds better.

Is this what you are talking about? I haven't purchased any in years. I have this one. Must be 30+ years old.

Can't remember where I saw them, but recently came across set of dies that are hinged. You open them, clamp on to good threads, lock, then turn into bad threads to chase them. Looks like a great idea. Maybe try googling.

X2 on thread restoring files. Used them on spindle threads before and they worked good.

Bingo. Went to my local parts store and he called a few places. One guy said they were called a "swagger" nut. This is the brand he was talking about. Of course he didn't have any and said he couldn't get them anymore.

Tractor Supply shows to have some. I'll run by there in the morning and snoop around some. Both the local parts store and John Deere said they have guys come in all the time asking for them but no one knew where to find them nowadays.

Depending on how bad the spindle is chewed up, we've had luck with a thread chaser. https://www.otctools.com/sites/default/files/styles/vt_commerce_imag... .

I've got one of those along with a few thread files but they aren't gonna help me with this axle. Threads are all but gone. I've used these Schwaiger nuts before on an axle with less threads than this one with good results. Just need to find one.

Otc 7402, you can look that up, it's the thread restorer we use for axles, works great but just don't go to deep with it.

I have often wondered this too. You used to find them at every parts store and they worked great, then overnight they just disappeared. We always called them Schwag nuts. A john Deere 630 disk has a spindle that is welded to the frame and is a nighhtmare if you strip the spindle and cannot find these. Im pretty sure half the spindle nuts on mine are this style of nut.

This rekindled my interest and it looks like after some searching the generic name for them is a "clamp lock nut"

I used my last ones on a Fair Oaks roller. Same deal, welded spindle and too much work to replace when one of these will get you back running in no time. Tisco has them but there's no stores close by who buy from them anymore. SMA and Temco don't have any. Fastenal acted like they had never heard of them. I got a lot of blank stares when I asked for these in the past. I'll check with Tractor Supply in the morning and see if they have any. I'll post if I find any.
