Subject: Gate that hinges at both ends

NE Ohio
We have a location where we would to have an 18 foot gate hinged at both ends. Depending on where we are going with the skidsteer we would like to hold the cattle in the barn or in the lot. We are looking for a hinge that could also be unlatched so the gate could swing open from the opposite end. Currently 6x6's serve as the posts. Has anyone seen or built something like this?

Thanks!

Update: Thank you for the quick responses and suggestions. I should have mentioned that the 6x6's are set in concrete and have support. Our plan is to use an approach like NoTill1825's. I'll try to post back with pics of what we build.

I've thought about this many times over the yrs, but never really came up with anything that works easily (esp for one that large). You need to be able to lift it off one set of hinges onto the other end and to bear weight is the problem. So you'd need to either man handle it all the time, or design a hinge that takes the weight and locks into place, but then the tolerances from one end to the other need to be pretty precise, to swap back and forth. And we all know how gates just love to stay square and true to where you set them.

Possible to have a shorter gate on each end that meet in the middle? Overlap them a couple ft for strength if need be.

Hog barn gates use a rod at each end that serves as the hinge. You just pull which ever rod you want depending on which way you want the gate to swing. The rods don't provide much carrying capacity so on big gates they would be heavy to swing unless you could put a wheel at each end.

double gates-they are both the same length but you need enough room to swing both open-we run into the problem and usually end up rethinking what the gates need to do-Adams gates weigh 300-800# so hanging gates by hand is not a option-sometimes the gate only serve one 90 degree importance so we try to tuck that gate in tight when not used

I've seen them at sale barns before. It's like a gate within a gate. The whole thing opens for one direction then for the other way the outside frame is fixed and the center of the gate opens other direction. So the cattle hafta step over bottom pipe to go one direction. May not work for you if you want to drive through it both directions. Works for just cattle.

A local welding shop makes these gates. They are extremely heave and they use them where my BIL works for working cattle and pen gates. This hinge setup is on both ends of the gate.

edit - third pix is of the latch to keep the gate open.

I don't know about your hinges, but a 6/6 wood post is not enough post for an 18' gate, unless maybe if it is made of plastic.

If you put the bottom hinge in the concrete you can hold the gate well-we have several gates that just hang the top hinge on wood 6x6's-the gates weigh 400#

I assumed he had concrete because he said barn-there is several gates in this picture that if you look close have different top and bottom hinges-a 2inch solid shaft through the gate end will let you do many things-and I could make a simple gate now after thinking about it that will work excellent for ksmith that would allow him to do just what he wants to do-we dealt with hinges for years until one day I had a brain fart and figured out how to use solid shafts and pipe-one application we welded a pipe on a souix gate and used the same shafts we use to hang the 4-8wt gates and it works excellant

I did something similar here.  I was installing a row of headlock panels, and wanted occasional access through one of the panels.  We had a number of strap hinges laying around, so I welded one on each corner of the headlock panel, and bolted four corresponding ones to the 8x8 posts.  I bent the strap hinge around the back-side of the post and lagged it tight.  I used bolts with a nut in each corner, but you would be better off with a long bolt that fits a little loosely.

We take a 20' continuous fence panel, cut to length. Weld a pipe on each end, with pipe eyes for gate hinge. Put wood post hinges on each end and drop a 4' rod as hinge pin. Post hinge is 3/4 ready bolt with pipe eye welded to it. Can open either end and posts only carry weight when opening. I put an old screw in hinge somewhere to set gate on when open.

I like to bend the top of hinge rod so we can hang it on fence when we pull it.
