Bought a surplus generator with a 5.9 cummins on it. How can I tell if it is a 24 volt system or a 12 volt system. It is army so I assume 24 volt but not sure.

South Central Kansas
Look at the tag on the starter or look at how the batteries are hooked up.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

You could try tracing the battery cable and "how" they are attached at batteries = might be a clue. (if it is really old, it might have a Series/Parallel switch on it)

Have you lightly scraped any paint off of the starter's data tag = it might say 12 V or 24 V; on it.

no batteries there and no cable to hook the two batteries together there. They are definitely to be hooked in series, but don't know if it is two sixes or two twelves.

Faunsdale, AL
Search online for the military designation of your generator (MEP005 etc)

Most likely you aren't the only one with one and someone else may have been looking for the same info.

Might find a copy of operators manual etc.

If you hook it up as 12v and it turns over slow, switch it to 24. You won't hurt anything that way. Also, what alternator is on it?

I think everything military is 24 volt. Steel Soldiers.com forum has a generator forum page that you could ask on. 3 phase?

That's correct, all 24 volt, no 6 volt batteries.
