Subject: Torque multipliers

I have a piece of equipment that has some bolts that need to be torqued to 800 ft-lbs on a regular basis. I don't have anything capable of this and am guessing I need some type of fancy torque wrench with a torque multiplier. I have never used or even seen one. Looking for advice on what to buy.

How much room do you have? Can you get a 8 ft. Bar on it? Than you could weld a nut to a extension at 8 ft and only Need a 100 torque wrench.... Dennis

We have a 4:1 snap-on torque multiplier. It is a 3/4" - 1/2". Since buying it we've use it a lot more than I expected.

We just bought one this year from buzzard gulch IIRC. We don't use it often enough to pay what snap on, Mac, or Matco wants. Been happy with it so far.

I've got the one from northern also. 3-1 ratio. Works good and wasn't as spendy as most. As mentioned you will find you use it more than you expected to.

I bought one similar to this:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Torque-Multiplier-9-to-1-1-2-input-3-4-output-Mammoth-brand-my-ref-416-/281622868099?hash=item419207f083:g:rVsAAOxyTMdTNELv

Mine looks identical to this except for the ratio....this one is 9:1....the one I have is 16:1 and has 1" drive output
(Note, the ratio isn't the same as torque output  (9:1 outputs 6.5:1 torque)  (16:1 ratio tool outputs 12:1 torque)  The 12:1 torque output is very convenient since you can input the torque value as in/lbs and the output is ft/lbs....no calculation required.

The one I have works great!  Max. torque is over 2000 ft/lb.....you can torque a bolt to 250 ft/lb with a 3/8 ratchet without any trouble.

Torque multipliers are very handy, just remember you need room for the reaction bar as well.

Used the neighbors 6:1 the other day. You have to get some serious support under that thing. I thought I would hold it with one hand and work the ratchet with the other. You talk about not thinking something through. LOL. Got to get one.

I have a 4 to 1 torque multiplier. 3/4" in 1" out. Works great and well worth the money. It goes up to 3k lbs and I have to tighten a bolt on my backhoe to 2400 lbs. but now that I have it I use it quite a bit. If I get a stubborn bolt or nut. Like when some idiot tightens truck lug nuts down to much and my one inch impact can't break them the multiplier will get them loose every time.

Mine cost about 1,000

When needing support if possible it works great using a overhead hoist or cherry picker with a cinch strap on it to hold the support bar.

Have two, here...bought from an auction, people don't understand what it is until its sold...3/4 in 1 inch out is common...seldom do we need it that an inch impact won't do much easier...They aren't exact as many hope they are, as the gears and bearings take up energy, the 8 ft cheater is the best way of being exact, its handy, and cost is very reasonable...2 inch tubing slipped over a heavy pry bar will always get ya there...Problem becomes what to go from the cheater to the '2 1/2 inch socket' with and that is where the multiplier works...Its reaction bar is strong, looks like an 1 3/4 piece of light tubing but its stout, will accept a heavy pry bar then the 2 inch tubing over that...most recent here was breaking loose the four bolts holding the tail weight on an excavator so we could get to the left hand side of the engine...that was an education, thought there would be more holding it on than four bolts but they are large.

I don't know if something like this would interest you, but I made one for tightening dual bolts and works pretty well.

http://www.freeinfostuff.com/TorqueExtension/TorqueExtension.htm

I don't remember off the top of my head how long mine is, but I use a 1/2" torque wrench set at about 125# to tighten my dual bolts to 460#. I have the number for conversion written on the extension. Works for me.

These are the bolts I have to tighten.

I ordered a proto 6222 today off eBay for $400. Hope it does the trick.
