I'm thinking about putting an 8500# electric winch on my gooseneck trailer.  Anyone ever done this?  If you have how did you mount it?  What kind of reinforcing did you have to do?

Looking at your previous post, did you end up bracing the winch channel, or was it strong enough as it was?

This is how I set mine up. So far it has worked great. This is just one of many ways it could be done.

I used a channel iron for a base and welded it to the uprights at the front of the deck. I also bolted the fairlead to the smaller channels that were already on the neck. I imagine some trailers are designed differently, but they were there and too convenient to  not take advantage of. I have a large battery in a plastic box secured in the neck and used the same cable that my power tarp roller on the grain trailer used to make connections. I found plugs and sockets to match the power tarp system, so that I can use the semi tractor when needed to pull the trailer, and installed a set of heavy cables on my towing pickup from the batteries to a receptacle mounted in the bed. The up side to that I found later, is I have my slip in fuel tank wired with the same plug. Very convenient-and it looks like I actually had a plan! The battery plus the heavy cables are probably overkill, but I have never had a low power problem. I found a cheap wireless remote on ebay for the winch so I can guide my treasure onto the trailer while operating the winch.

I reinforced the front channel iron and added a 5000lb winch. It looks heavy enough but never put it to a real test. Enough for cars, small tractor and scissors lift. I have a snach block if i need more pull.

That is a pretty standard mounting. Good channel iron in between the uprights.

I have a 12K milemarker on my GN. That channel never gives at all. I even broke the cable, doubled back with a snatch block, pulling on a dead 1254 rogator. If that wouldn't test it, nothing would.

I worry more about the 4 bolts holding it down..... so far so good.

I have yet to use it. Good insurance policy I guess.

Like what you did there.

I have wondered if it would work to use stake pockets to mount a winch on a longer trailer (or a drop deck trailer). That way you could start pulling near the back of the trailer and move the winch to the front to get the tractor all the way to the front.

Yup, channel iron between the uprights works fine. I had a 17k smittybilt on my last Big Tex gooseneck. Tested it to 15k and didn't tear anything up.

On our Big Tex there is a 2x4 cross member between the uprights. I want to weld a piece of channel flat side up on top on the 2x4 member. Bolt the winch to that. And if needed add a few triangle gussets from the bottom of the channel to the x member. The winch is on the front of my truck right now.

Mounting a winch like that is a sure way to break the housing. It needs to be mounted to the vertical support.

Here's the mount I made for mine. It's the frame you see mounted about halfway down the uprights with the hitch receiver tube welded to it. The long angle irons are about 1/4" thick steel.
The winch is mounted on a heavy plate with a receiver hitch welded to the underside of the plate. That way I can use the winch for other applications and if I don't need the winch (which is 80% of the time) I can remove it so it isn't out in the rain, snow, road salt, etc.
