Amherst WI | I have a bad compaction problem on one of my farms. I have beans on it and they ares tunted and yellow. I tried to cultivate them today but the cultivator wouldn't hardly go in the ground. Do you think ripping them down the center of the rows would help?

Don't have any experience but I thought about trying it on some corn this year. I didn't have time to do it and by the time the ground got dry enough the corn was too tall anyway.

My neighbor one year took a 3pt Nh3 applicator (no tank) through his corn rows to break up the ground and aerate it. He seemed to think it helped. It would penetrate where a cultivator would skim across the top. I don't see why it wouldn't work with beans. Edited by TD15 7/12/2008 21:22

Eastern Ontario | If you're going to rip in between the rows, just remember that you will bring up some dirt and that could cause problems with combining. Last thing I would want is push dirt with my header. I wonder if Ammonium Laureth sulfate could loosen up some of that ground. I haven't used it in many many years but remember that it let water penetrate much faster. Not sure what it will do to the beans though. Do some research before you try this.

Western illinois | i was thinking a nh3 bar as well. a true ripper would most likely bring up some ugly slabs if it's that hard, may expose too many roots as well. it could be a mess if you don't get some good rains to settle the ground later. maybe do a test strip and wait a few days for results? good luck.

Iowa | I would not do any inter-row ripping. As mentioned by others, there is the potential for root damange and bringing up slabs. Also, ripping degrades the soil structure enough that it would leave trenches between each of your rows, which encourages rutting. Do you believe that some sort of rolling harrow would be able to penetrate anything?
