East Central Illinois
Back in our ridge till days with alternating strips the theory was N/S row configuration, provided better sun utilization ,thus in theory yield bump

FWIW, seem to remember reading that tests done in Ontario Canada (I think in the 1960's or 70's) said N-S were better than E-W. One reason given was sunlight (as another user stated), another reason was that roots tended to orient themselves N-S as well so there was less root damage when doing inter-row cultivation.
