Subject: Front hitch's on pickup's

Montevideo,Minnesota
Looking at putting hitch's on the front on some pickups to be able pull them behind implements in the spring and fall.

What type should a person do? Ball type or hitch pin type?

Looking different mounting brackets on equipment also?? I' m thinking somewhere along the lines just bolts instead welding the implements or combines

Something with an adjustable reach so a person can hook up by themselves.

Just looking for some ideas and do's and don'ts on this.

Thanks!

You want an adjustable hitch on the truck for sure and i would sure go with hitch pin but that's just me. We have old hitch on just about everything and just have a ball hitch for high speed tractor behind pickup, so we opt for hitch pin when ever possible. When i hook ours up i slid over to center of the truck, try and eye it right in the center, then you can get out and hook it up with the extension and your good to go. Leave truck idling in N, we don't touch transfer case or anything, leave it in 2wd. Ours has a bracket that bolts to the frame and a removable hitch, take it off for 9 months, not sure if i have a picture.

Ideally you want bolt on but if you have to weld i wouldn't be afraid of it, it's not like your going to need to take it off for some reason. If you trade 99% sure it won't fit the new, just let it go. All of ours bolt on just because that is what worked.

Put transfer case in neutral and transmisson in park then you don't need to leave it idle.

How did you go bout mounting the hitch's on front of the pickups?

Did you go where the tow hooks are at?

Will be all on Chevy/Gmc pickups. Mid 90's thru 15' model pickups

Thanks

This truck is a 94' chevy, yes we used removed the tow hooks and used those for the main pull. Their is a bolt into the bumper as well but that is more just to keep it vertical and square. I'll try and get some close up pictures. We don't have any on newer 2003 and 2005 trucks yet, we should but just haven't gotten to it as it hasn't been 100% requirement like it was on 94' (working alone). My next project is a tow hitch for ATV, i think it would be really handy.

I'm sorry, but what is the reason for that in a 4wd? Maybe there is something I am not aware of?

But looks like a good way to waste gas, and to plug up the air filter with dust pretty quick.

Automatic transmission needs lubed if you leave it in neutral and don't put the transfer case in neutral. That's why I said to put the transfer case in neutral and leave the tranny in park. That is the correct way to do it.

When we asked mechanic that is what he said, he still says the same thing today. I trust him. That truck has 313000 miles, we only drive mile or two at a time.

Build one to fit the truck and your use is only way I would go.

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463
Did it for years.

All of my hitches came from these people:

https://www.flameengineering.com/products.php?category_id=15

My favorite was the model B-100. On website - Lower picture, right side.
Mounted to some kind of deal I made that bolted to the frame.
Did not bolt to the bumper.

Easy to hook up.
The two going forward pieces can be removed and stored in the pickup bed.
It planning to use again soon, I folded it against the front of the pickup and fastened. If it was going to be a long time, I removed it and stored in the back.

The picture at the bottom of this post is a Frame Mount very much like the model I used. Forward pieces with the Telescope deals is the same.

Also had one of the Frame Mount EZ Hitch Model EZ203-B models.
Middle row of pictures, left side.
This model fits very nice against the bumper when not in use. Out of the way, looks nice.
Harder to hook up than the model B-100 I wrote about above.

Being a One Man operation that was spread out a lot. I used the hitch a lot.
Towed behind grain cart, big truck, another pickup, tractor, On rear hitch of disk harrow. etc, etc, etc
Made a hitch for my Donahue trailer that I moved my 12 row planter with.
Could move pickup with planter then.

Late I put a tow hitch on a small pickup. Dodge Ram 50 I think. Four banger built in Japan. That thing towed great.
Also had one on a Dodge Dakota four banger two wheel drive.
Earlier I had them on both Ford F-100 pickups and Chevy full size half tons, 4x4. Also one Chevy 3/4 two wheel drive.
Also a Jeep Cherokee 4x4. I think a 88 model.

Towing a small pickup with a bigger one worked good.
Much better than a F-100 with a half ton Chevy.

Also hooked two pickups together. Then towed the two with a tractor.

Towed all in neutral, both auto trannies and the two with manual trans.
Never shifted transfer case into neutral.
And never left engine running.

Was told to do it that way by a very good auto tranny mech.
Said for no further than you tow, and at the tractor speeds I would not hurt a thing.

Also I have heard of people tieing something to the steering wheel.
Never did it.

Roll all the windows up!!!!

As far as building one vs buying a manufactured one.
I have looked a many home built or welding shop built hitches.

Some looked like crap, maybe worst. A collection of junk.
Most did not a telescoping deal to make hooking up a lot easier.
I would think a one person non-telescoping hookup would be a really job.

Others often build in welding shops looked better. Built by people that know how to work with mild steel.
But:
Often built very heavy - just plain over weight.
And would bet cost more than a factory built.
These days it does not take a lot of Time & Materials to get to $500-

I know that. That is what I always did.

Never idled a tow vehicle if you could put the transfer case in N. That is what it is for, towing.

In some cases...like a 6.0 Ford with electronic 4wd shifting there is no neutral position for the transfer case...that is my issue anyway. Prob have one on mine for next year tho. BIL has one on his Chevy and can shift the electronic into neutral but put the lever in park. Very handy

Paul, we put a hitch on a 1990s F250.... Think we got it at Runnings. Been on for years, only issue we had was make sure the hitch safety pin is in... The F250 took a little ride into the ditch after turning a corner. =)

A lot of these factory made hitches are finger pinchers. Be careful. Guy in Northfield makes a good hitch.

Purchased a reman. unit from www.CampingWorld.com with twin telescopic legs. It self stores across the front of the vehicle and needs no tools to install. Took the ball coupler off and made a clevis/pin style. Made a combo towbar mount / snowplow mount / front receiver for both the Jeep and the Dodge pick-up. Steve

I made mine and can take it off with two pins and use it another truck. Bought the square tubing at Walmart's (Walmart was $12.00 TSC was $20.00) and welded them on. Then you can put a receiver hitch in to push other stuff around.
