north-central Indiana west of Fulton | We have not really had problems with mice in our combine (as was a topic on here recently). Just finished a pretty extensive cleanup of the combine , inside and out. Once we check everything over on the combine and are ready to put in winter storage, we spray a mix of used hydraulic oil and diesel fuel in and around the rotor, the feeder house, the elevators, grain tank, and in the cleaning area. Use generous amounts while machine is running. We did this today and feel it gives mice a less desirable place to hang out. Pontiac, IL. | Does this really work???? I know of people that swear by this. However, years ago, we had rats underneath our fuel tanks in our yard. The tanks had been there for YEARS, with used oil and fuel spilled around them. Didn't seem to deter the rats at all.

NW IN | I buy about 6 boxes of mothballs. Toss in feeder house, grain tank, scatter around engine, and climb in in front of spreader and make sure they get all the way up front and in the sieves. No problems last three years.

Mid-Michigan | I do a similar winter job. I am going to look for a sprayer like your's though. I use a metal fruit tree sprayer that my dad has used for years for oiling chains. It works great except you have to continue to pump it up and drag it around. I mix about a pint of chainsaw bar oil and the rest diesel fuel. I do the moth ball deal in the machine. After I clean the cab, I put the dryer sheets my wife uses to dry the clothes. Smell a lot better than moth balls and mice seem to keep out. Never had an issue. Edited by AGB 10/30/2015 00:41

I have an airless sprayer that works great for oiling chains , equipment and whatever. All I do is have a 5 gallon pail that the piece of suction pipe sets in and put in whatever oil I want to use. The hose is 50 feet long so I do not have to move the sprayer around to do the oiling and it stays indoor out of the rain and such, and contentious supply of oil.

NEIA | Somebody figured out that rodents and racoons don't like mint. Now their making garbage bags that are mint scented. I bought a bottle of mint extract at the local grocery store and watered it down in a spritz bottle (an empty windex would work). I spray a mist all over in the cab including the headliner and seat. Last year was the first time and it kept the mice out. Going to get some mint smelling air fresheners to throw around the motor compartment and other areas this year.

Germany | I guess it is not the oil that keeps the rats out but the lack of dust and grain... In other words cleaning up properly helps. But a fine oil mist is good for rust protection when wet stuff went through the combine in the end of the harvest. Don't overdo and you'll not have oily/spoiled grain when starting over next season (but let's not dig too deep into that issue). Edited by countryman 10/30/2015 07:41
