Subject: JD S690 battery question

Roseglen, North Dakota
Why does this combine require 2 huge batteries (D-5)? Same engine displacement as 9870 and batteries are twice as big. They are $410 each from JD. Does anyone else make this battery other than Deere?

What battery size? A D-5 does not relate.

Some call it a 5D. Saw one myself at JD dealer today, plainly says 5D 1400 CCA. Used on 680's, 690's, and some 6R tractors (only 1 on them but 2 are used on the combines) It reminds me very much of the big batteries that the older Versatiles had mounted behind the cab but thot those were called 8D's. Wondering if the 5D's are manufactured by Exide exclusively for Deere? Have called Napa, Interstate, everyone draws a blank.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say the reason they have to be bigger, is because with so much of the combine needing electrical power, the alternator is getting over worked. You got everything in the cab electric, fan in the cab constanly running, gps, all gauges , warning lights, electric over hydralic controls for most adjustments, not to forget the newr lights for nightime harvest that can light up a small town. In the old days, i could run a combine all day if the battery was dead and we jump started it. Now you darn near have to be an electrical enginier to run most equipment .

They're that big because in some focus group meeting some BTO told some corporate rep that one of his field managers had mentioned having difficulty starting one of his 36 combines in January when it was -15 and they were still trying to shell corn.

Just for the heck of it I'd try your local Case dealer.

Pretty sure my S660 has two alternators so I would imagine the 680s & 690s do also

I just called my carquest guy out of curiosity.  He can get 5d batteries.  It's a 6 volt 880 cca, list price of $157.  Something is not adding up.  Are you sure it's a 5D?

I believe u are right on the money koldcanuck. We forgot to hit the switch on the battery box last fall and froze our batteries and it cost us dearly. Close to 1000 bucks.
