Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS
Post below about older tractor you wish you still had got me to thinking. (I know. That's dangerous). But before John Deere came out with their Sound Guard Body it is my understanding that almost all cabs were after market add-ons. Of those cabs, which one would you say was the best: Hiniker, Stopler, Year-Around, etc. (not sure of the spelling on any of the names)?

I didn't mind the QT1 Year A Round I had...Could've even had AC, though mine didn't.

But in regards to factory cabs, yes, there were other factory cabs before JD's Sound Guards.

Wanted a sun shade and some protection on our 856.... so 20 years ago put a $200 Year A Round cab on. Like it for what we do with the tractor and like it better than the cabs on our 1066's in the seventies.

the factory 20 series cabs weren't to bad for there era.
my 4020 had a year round and I couldn't wait to get that thing off.

any of them old cabs that didn't have AC or insulation you were almost better off with an umbrella. quieter outside the cab then inside. !!

I'm with easymoney on this one. If you don't have to worry about plowing snow when it's below zero I'd leave the cab off on those older tractors. even with air conditioning they were so noisy you needed ear plugs. we filled the steering colum full of insulation on a 4520 and put insulation under the floor. Thats just my opinion. But both of those cabs Hiniker and Year aound were built by a couple of farmers about 20 miles from here. They would throw an entire nights production in the scrap pile if something was wrong rather than cut it apart and start over.

Year-Around held up the best here in this area, 2nd was Hiniker, I put a Meade on a 930 Comfort King in 1976 to get out of the cold plowing in the falls, here in Wis. I bought the Meade when they went out of buiness or bankrupt in a crate for $650, that was half of a Year-Around at that time. Dan

Oliver made some good OE cabs in the late sixties and early seventies. Deluxe cab on the 1850 was ahead of its time, with outstanding visibility. Great for row crop cultivating. Don't think any of the cabs of this era were very quiet...until the JD soundgard. I recall that a 1975 4630 was nearly 10 db quieter than our 1975 2-150, which was soon replaced with a 4640. (Maybe the best tractor of its day.) Both the 4640 and 1850 still sit in the barn. 1850 has just 2600 hours and doesn't look much different than the first time I drove it in 1968.

That is sure low hours on the 1850.....do you have a picture ? Neighbors had an 1850 in '65 I think then got a 1650 then a 1955.

Won't be at the farm for a few days. Plus, I'm sure that building is socked in with snow. Will get a photo when I can. Should I post it or email ? My dad keeps threatening to sell it, although it's probably not for sale. Cab and hours make it a bit of a "one of a kind" so it may be hard to value. I can recall only one night that it's ever sat outside. I try to use it on a mower or blade from time to time so it doesn't feel neglected ! Best driving and handling tractor I've driven. Hard to beat the 6 x 3 transmission. 18 speeds of pure smooth.

.
I have a Hiniker on an 806. When we fixed up the tractor a couple years ago it was either fix up the cab or find fender and platform parts. Since the cab had all the glass and was solid I opted for fixing up the cab.

I remember our first cab on a 4020JD .It was a yellow Cozy Cab and we ran it one morning and removed it and dealer came and picked it up.The older cabs make a neat little shelter for kids waiting for the bus if fixed up right. Also saw an old telephone booth that was cute except people would stop to try and use it.I have had most every good cab before the SoundGuard and was pretty proud of them but they were all noisy.

That looks great....just put a cab kit in our 856. I see you have the same step tool box that we have.

A neighbor had a black stripe 966 with a cozy cab that had the angled doors, he had the dealer put it on when he bought the tractor new. I only sat in it idling not when it was working, but it seemed really quiet and tight and it was really a nice looking tractor.

To bshannon that tractor and cab really looks nice, I think that is the first Hiniker 1300 I've seen that didn't have the hand holes in the fenders.

I have 2 856s one with a Hiniker 1300 and one with a YAR Qt1, I don't have them fixed up very nice, but I have been glad to have them the last few days. I just take the doors off in the summer. I have two sons that learned to drive in those tractors and thought it would good to have roll over protection, and a little shade.
