Subject: truckpaper over priced ads?

Alliance, NE
I have been looking at peterbilt, 378 and 379 mainly, trucks for the past 2 months. Man it seems like some of these dealers/private units are overpriced.... to me anyway.
How inflated do you guys think some of these trucks are? Most it seems can't produce much paperwork, but have no problem saying recent work done in there add. To me it looks like some of these pre emission trucks from Cali are $10k-30k overpriced....but I really don't know.
I spoke with a neighbor and he has a 2002 pete 379exhd that is very nice and he has paperwork to show. Truck has around 750,000miles, flat top, all the bells and whistles wet kit ect. He was thinking if he sold it he would ask around $45k. But doesnt think he will sell it because it is a good truck for him. I bet that same truck on truckpaper would be $60k+??
Another local truck I have seen is just as nice with same type of paper trail. Uni built sleeper not flat top though. And no wet kit. 900,000 miles. He bought it for around $40k and put a little work into it and is now asking $60k. The original owner before him took excellent care of his truck.
I'm just wondering what others are seeming and if there is much room to bargin on these trucks? Thanks

Why not find a 500,000mi Columbia day cab and wet kit for about 30k instead? Thatd be my choice for a good farm truck

Can you can drive a freightliner or international if you want to do it on a tight budget. Gets the job done just as well.

I looked and looked also for a pete 379. I ended up getting one on a taylor martin auction but still paid too much. I settled for a c 13 with 520k. The c15 motor would have added at least 10k-15k.
Dealers say they the pre 2008 trucks are like gold and seems they can ask about anything they want for them and seem to get it from what I saw. RB auction sold about 3 low mile daycab 378s and 379s in sacramento about a month ago for in the mid 70k range.

Yes a lot of the Pete's are over priced but u have to realize the truck u want or it sounds like the truck u want is the same truck lots of guys want so its easy to put that high price tag on them. I myself have and am still looking for a nice flattop 379exthd but I just refuse to overpay for one. Whatever u do don't settle for a freightshaker or international just because it will do the same as the Pete's & KW's. Get what u want as u r the one that's gotta drive it and u will be much happier driving the truck u want and like. I can't stand I when people answer questions like urs about the Pete's and KW's with the well u can do it cheaper with xxxxx brand.

I currently have a international 9200, sterling , a 379 pete, and a century class freightliner. Seems like the build quality of the pete is best. My int 9200 has been a good truck but has a smaller m11. The sterling is ok it rides nice but lacks power and is all plastic inside and costs a fortune to fix dash pieces. The freightliner is all plastic as well and gets stuck on a wet fart...lol.
Anyways I just like the looks of Petes and some kenworths I guess. Having some resale value is nice too. I never thought a wanted a half way nice truck for the farm but I kinda do and I like the looks of the pete the best plus they seem to ride nice and hold together decent on the roads. Maybe I am just dreaming of a nice truck.....cheaper that way!

exactly. After owning a freightliner I've figured out life is too short for that nonsense. I just picked up my new truck Friday in New York. 07 KW W900 with 560,000 miles 550 cat 18 speed and I gave $50,000 for it. A lot less than truck paper ads.

Then pay the Pete price and no complaining about it. The op said that Pete's he looked at seemed over priced, others suggested to look at a different make.

If I ever find a truck that will work I am gunna have to sale the Int and my pete. I would like to keep the pete as it has c15 and nice power. I just don't have the funds and workload to support a bunch trucks. Adding a live bottom would be nice too

Actually I have been noticing for the last 6-8 months anyway, that all brands pre-emission are going up in price. One can buy 08s and newer all day, but 07s and older are getting tough to come by. Even Freightliners that a year ago would bring 10k are now getting 20k and up. The cali trucks are a hot buy as they have run in little road salt in general.

I know what ur saying. I have two trucks now. A 95 W900 that runs, rides, & drives great then a 96 9400 international that runs real good but drives fair at best and the ride is nothing to brag about. If I can find the truck I'm looking for I'm sure the international will be for sale.

I have been looking for another truck as well , the pre-emmision trucks are bringing more than ever. I can buy a 2009 with 150,000 less miles than a 2006 for 10 grand less.

On a well taken care of truck......how much is mileage a factor. I spoke with one guy that had 2.3 million on a 1995 pete 379 with sleeper. I didn't get to see the truck in person but it looked nice. As soon as I heard mileage I pretty much said thanks but no thanks. He was asking 40k but was open for an offer. Granted it wasn't a off road farm truck but still that is a lot of miles. But if u think about it it's a 20yr old truck and that's only 115,000 miles per year on average....which doesnt seem like a whole lot....well maybe it is...lol .2400 miles a week. Oh well....I let that one go...but it was pretty it the pics

I think trucks will get cheaper with lower oil prices, they have sucked up a BUNCH of trucks over the last 6 or 7 years--new, used, good and junk.

The 05 was we had. I've already been talking to a guy to convert this one to single. This engine was built 2/07. One of the last pre emission cats. But 05 and 06 had some serious issues. The price was right and the truck is immaculate so I'm gonna gamble. And probably gonna eat crow before its over I bet. But I'm not giving $40,000 for an 03 with 1 million miles on it.

Well, I'm from the old school. "Back in the day"....5-6 million was not unheard of. A well taken care of truck, especially a Peterbilt or Kenworth, is like a well taken care of Steiger. They run forever.

Asking price and selling price are two different things.Peterbilt trucks are comparable to higher priced luxury type car and people associate Peterbilt with quality.I have had most all brands and I get paid the same whether I had a $4000 cabover or $50000+ 379 pete.As we just use ours for farming I want the lightest ,set back axle.big power truck I can afford and nothing newer than 2007.I actually prefer the 12.7 Det but now have 14 L which isn't quite as good.I see many farmers in our area that have big sleeper Petes, 250+W.B. with 600H.P.,just to use as a status symbol to pull their new hopper with 4 rows of lights that seem to have problems keeping fuses from blowing.I know in my business of selling a few tractors many use Tractor House asking price as a quide or dealer pricing and I go closer to auction price and try to make a deal where seller thinks he didn't get enough and I think I gave too much so we are pretty close.

The used truck dealer who works on mine says its getting ridiculous what pre-emission trucks are going for. Ive got a 03 KW with a C12 and you couldn't pry that from my dead hands. underpowered for pulling a van, but it doesn't cost me much. Try looking repos maybe. theres some nice trucks out there and maybe you can get a deal from a bank even if it needs some work. they aren't advertised as well. IMO, id take a pete with 1.5 mil miles on it before a new 'shaker, Volvo, or intertrashinal. when you you've got one they hold onto their value.
