What would be the best way to clean the rust off of an old milk can?

I do not want to sandblast and paint.

I just want it to look good for a one time display.

I want it to look rustic just not rusty.

Vinegar will remove rust like that. The easy way is to dunk it in a larger container but that wll take a lot so I would try painting it on and wiping it off. Or a shallow pan and just keep rolling it around until it's all clean.
There are commercial rust removers that are a gel like substance that will stick and remove the rust and then you wipe them off.
You will need to treat the surface afterwards with either paint or light oil cause it will start to rust again almost immediately.

..Wash it with a pad of Scotch Brite. Use something like Zip Wax car wash...and the wax might keep it from developing that loose rust will get all over everything.

Wire brush the rust off down to bare metal, then wipe it down two or three times with a rag soaked in WD-40. I've done two cans this way, and years later they still look good more than 20 years later.

I wonder what they would look like if sandblasted and then do the WD40 thing before they have a chance to rust?

You might try walnut shells, or glass beads for an abrasive, instead of sand.

Try Naval Jelly. http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/s_trmt_naval/overview/Loctite-Nava...

If you do blast it try something less abrasive than sand at first.

You need to get a pump sprayer and muratic acid. You can dilute the mixture up to 50% with just water. It will eat the rust off right away then wash with water and wd-40 or something with a rag to stop surface rusting. I have done this before and takes little effort.
