roaming | For those who couldn't make the conference today, here's a brief recap of the first session.
After the initial opening and welcome, Matt Darr took the stage with a thoughtful and data-driven (of course) look at why big data has value. Big data has been around for several years, but has recently come to center stage due to the increasing availability of software tools to analyze the raw data and turn it into usable information.
Matt talked about several topics, including evaluating planning costs vs execution costs, the economic impact of management decisions, and the importance of defining one's expectations.
The session then transitioned to a panel discussion/Q&A with two growers. Questions ranged from "how do you know when you're making the right decision based on a dataset", to the relative merits of in-house vs outsourced analysis and data warehousing, to the impact of data on daily operational logistics, to whether data changes decision-making timetables.
And session 2 begins... now!
