Nebraska aka the boondocks
I literally know nothing about CRP, but it would seem that signing back up would be in the cards now, or not? Any thoughts on acres going back in this next year... Using the last hired, first fired logic, it would seem the marginal acres will disapprear and the marginal ground will be the first to be dropped and not rented.

Would seem to me that there can only be CRP enrollment if there is money in the budget to pay for the acres.

"Paying farmers not to grow" doesn't seem likely to be something congress would vote to fund, unless, it comes with a big dose of environmental activist-type rules.

another question about crp- since the usda cut the farm program more so into the conservation programs, how many acres that want to be enrolled will be allowed?

is "new" enrollment mean never been in CRP, or I guess is re-enrolling different than first timers??

I think I read the new farm bill caps crp at 24 million acres and there is like 35 million currently enrolled. So no new sign ups except for fragile areas. Almost all crp in my county is cash rented as quickly as it expires. Probably all should have been reenrolled, most looked at the new inflated land rental rates and cashed in!!!

New means land coming from row crop production. They do offer some re enrollment options and some buffer strip, wetland, continious stuff the way I understood.

Would be good for everyone if the roughest 10 million acres went back into CRP and pasture, alas this probably wont happen very fast.

"The 2014 Farm Bill ratchets down CRP’s total acreage cap over five years from its current statutory level of 32 million acres to 24 million acres, though this in and of itself is not a major loss. To a significant degree, this reduction tracks changes in CRP enrollment expected as a result of market forces, though with the declining cap the opportunity for new general sign-ups would be relatively small."

I would analyze this as saying that its going to be very difficult to renew contracts on anything but the most fragile acres, and next to zero on anything that is not currently in CRP.

SW KS, near Dodge City

That's a little misleading, b/c I believe there are only something like 25.5M acres in the category that needs to get to 24, not 32. Not sure where the 32 number comes from.
