Missouri | Your alternator has three terminals. The output post, and two terminals that should be marked "S" and "I" on the two pin connector.
Run a brand new, heavy gauge (8 is good, 6 is better, 4 better yet) cable from the output post to the starter solenoid post where the batteries are connected.
S is the sense line. This is how the internal voltage regulator senses the voltage and adjusts output. It is sufficient to connect it to the output post of the alternator, but it is better yet to also route it to the starter solenoid (same place as the output cable). This way, the voltage regulator will compensate for voltage drop in the charging cable.
I is the ignition line. It needs to be on switched power, run through a charge light to reduce voltage. It both activates the alternator, and provides an indication for the charge lamp. This lamp must have a good bulb in it for the alternator to function. You can identify this line as the one that will show 12 volts when the switch is on, and nothing when it is off.
Some of the wires in the picture will be extras. With the original generator, they would have connected the generator to the external regulator. They can be removed. The trouble is positively identifying them first. | |
