Subject: Field cultivator sweeps?

We have an old IH Vibra shank 45 that we have been putting Ultra wing sweeps on I think currently they are 8" sweeps. Was wondering how the Marathon 1 sweeps that Shoup sell compare to the Ultra wing. I see the Marathon sweeps don't come in 8" and wonder if 9s would be to wide? Will that inch make it pull harder than it already does?
Thanks for any input.

We have run a 45 cultivator for 34 years and have tried several different sweeps. Decided on the 7" width is as wide as you want to go or you'll have clearance problems with trash or weeds at times ( tried one set of 9" ultra wing). Currently using 7" ultra wing knock ons. 9" will pull harder too.

I like your tillage rig there - shows you don't have to spend a ton of money to get the job done!

Tried some Marathons and really dislike them. Stick with the ultra wings.

We just started working with Deere dealers to get something called CADEN Edge out there. It is a Tungsten Carbide Edge that normally triples the wear on most sweeps. Some guys found it a nice way to take a mediocre sweep and beef it up. Maybe knowing that is out there can help you make the right sweep choice.

Larry, I tried several different sweeps but the ultra wings wear better for me and the 7 inch work the best here. The larger will pull harder as others have stated .

Back when we had a IH # 45 & then a 4600 f'c' we always ran 7" sweeps. Tried 9" once and I felt they chunked the ground too much. Later on we we went to the DMIs & CIH/DMIs we switched to using Nichol's "Knock-on" Ultra-wings. Have tried other brands but nothing seemed to last as long as the Ultra-wings. Just ordered a set of their hard faced Ultra-wings for our Krause soil finisher. We normally go thru two sets of shovels a year and hope the hard faced shovels will last the entire year.

The Marathon sweeps I bought at least a decade ago were sharp only across the front 2 inches, the leading edges of the wings were blunt. That made them harder to pull and pushed weeds aside instead of cutting them off. Half a day under the field cultivator with a grinder and I converted them to sharp edges all the way out. Not any where near comparable to Ultra wind sweeps without all that grinding.

Thank you all for the replies. We will be keeping the Ultra wing sweeps.....Will have to decide whether to go with 7 or 8"

Thanks again.
