Dave, we have one of each...3020 is just as good a tractor as the 4020...but keep in mind that the 4020 has about 30 more horses and will handle many more jobs around the farm...the 4020 will ride better and have better resale...both are solid reliable tractors...I don't know what the price range are for them ...we bought the 4020 for 5,000 dollars at an estate sale, I feel that we got an excellent deal on it. the 3020 was bought brand new in 1966, I think I heard grandpa say he gave 6,000 dollars for it...

We have both. I heard once that the 3020's engine costs a little more to overhaul, because of the counterbalance shaft system. Both are good tractors. The 3020 is just 2 cylinders shorter in length.

3020 is a very handy tractor as stated above. They are priced all over the place depending on where you look. Craigslist, Tractorhouse, paper. I would say a straight average diesel w/ wide front is probably $6,000 give or take a thousand dollars depending on what the owner is claiming has been done to it. Recent overhaul, clutch etc.
Make sure it runs, drives, shifts right. You don't have to be a mechanic to know if something doesn't feel or sound quite right when you start and drive it. Just pay attention. Make sure the 3pt works. Then look at some little things that I missed when I bought my 3010. Check the water pump as best as you can. The fill neck on the radiator was broken and loose and of course not repairable. Take a flash light and look in and around the hydraulic pump. Look for leaks or anything that doesn't look right. Just look listen and don't be afraid to grab and wiggle things. Sometimes you might be suprised. Good Luck

I would say 3020 diesels are just as reliable as the 4020s, just a smaller version. They are very nice for light work as they are even more nimble than the 4020. Just depends on what you wana use it for. I did a complete overhaul recently on a 3020, not that bad of a job at all. Like the above poster commented, you do have the extra balancer to deal with but thats minor.

x2 on Farmin Fireman said have a 1970 3020 had it since 78 a very handy utility tractor will never sell it. A late model side console will bring as much as a 4020 .

My only criticism of them is that they tend to not start the best when it's cold, in my experience, but you could say the same of about any diesel from that era. Pretty solid little ole tractors though. Make sure the hydraulics are right on any you look at, you can spend a pile there.

I have two 3020 diesel a 68 and a 71 side console and factory cab and a power shift... The 68 has a loader on it, love for that easy to get around with and power for it's size.... We cut, rake, bale a lot of hay with them for a little fuel.. The 71 has over 12000 hours on it, and the 68 has over 9000 hours.... With little troubles...

Lots of them still going strong. One thing to watch for; the fuel pump had a tendency to leak fuel into the crankcase. The thinned out oil would allow the crank bearings to wear. Fuel pump shops can install a better seal that will correct the problem. If the tractor gains oil over time and it appears thin you will have a problem. The 24/12 volt system was not troublefree. There is a kit to convert everything to 12 volt; money well spent. I grew up on one. If it could survive me driving it as a teenager it has to be well made.

I blocked off the fuel pump hole on my gas 4020 with a bracket that holds an electric fuel pump. And the engine doesn't gain oil any more. The electric pump is very nice when its been parked for months, just turn on the ignition and wait for the electric pump to stop pumping, makes for much nicer starting that cranking the whole engine to replace the fuel evaporated from the carburetor. Should work on a diesel too.

We have 2 a 1968 and 1972 side counsel . The 72 is a treat to drive , quick steering, good hydraulics, ergomically better. It does need some hydraulic work as the pump looses its prime on start up but it has been that way for a while so we live with it. I don't think :Deere or any other manufacturer has built a longer lasting more useful tractor since then .

Bought a 3020 with blown motor and good everything else thought I was going to have cheap diesel tractor, block was wrecked, had a hard time finding one, if I had known before I tore it down and owed the mechanic I would have scrapped it. Got almost 11k in it now not power shift or side console... Learned a lesson there...

We currently have 4.
We have 1 high crop, 1 row crop with tall tires, 1 row crop with a loader and 1 row crop that used to have tanks on it. We had another high crop but it constantly had problem with spinning the main bearings so it was traded in a few years back on a new White HC.
