Subject: JD 4430 battery question

Parsons Kansas
Bought a new to me '76 JD 4430. It has two 11 month old 6 volt batteries in it.

I have a '73 JD 4430 already that I have put two 12 volt batteries in a long time ago. I don't think I did anything special to the tractor to accomodate the batteries as far as the wiring. It does start a little better though.

Question is can I take the 76 4430 and wire in series or parallel don't know which one it is and I don't really know how to do it to get 12 volts out of the two sixes? Also have a baler monitor and a rake control box that is wired up for 12 volts. I want the 76 4430 to be able to run them also. Would wiring up in series/parallel work with the monitors or should I just buy a new set of 12 volt batteries. Thanks for the help Darren

Your 4430 has 2-6 volt batteries wired in series to make 12 volts, if you change to 2-12 volt batteries they are wired parallel to still have 12 volts.

I've always wondered, and never think of it when talking to someone that would know, what is the advantage of two six volt batteries in series instead of two twelve volt batteries wired parallel? I have equipment wired both ways.

I think what you are asking, is how to wire up your bale monitor to get 12 volts.

( with two 6 volts batteries) You need to hook your ground wire to the right hand side battery(looking at tractor from the rear) BUT you need to hook you 12 volt POSITIVE wire to the left hand battery (by the starter)

Now, you could just run the baler monitor wires, over to the starter, itself; then hook positive to starter solenoid post; then hook negative to one of the mounting bolts of the starter(clean that surface up a little first, wire brush it) = 12 volts

This is two 12 volt batteries, in PARALLEL look like (just so you know)

A battery is a collection of cells. For lead acid batteries each cell puts out 2 volts. So a 6v battery has 3 cells attached in series. To get 12v out of two 6v batteries one would connect the negative of the first battery to the positive of the second. So a 4430 has the positive on the left side attached to the starter. The negative of the left battery is attached to the right battery's positive and the right battery's negative is grounded.

Just go to the starter on both machines to get the 12 volts.. Good examples and info above..

I think you can get the cables for a 4455 and put on it if you want to make it easy. The 55's and up had 12 volt batteries wired in parallel which is a much better setup. We have converted out 4450 and it was no big deal. two six volt batteries are kind of a pain, especially when you run electronics with them.
