Subject: Are Ford Trucks, the Only Ones With Manual Locking Hubs 4x4?

central - east central Minnesota -

I've been noticing alot lately, what appear to be new or new ford 4x4 trucks, with manual locking front hubs.
I've thought the day of manual locking hubs went south back in around yr 2000 or so.
Does Ford offer manual locking front hubs on their current new models ?
Which ones, if so ?
Do any of the other Mfg's offer their Trks with manual locking hubs ?
Just wonder . . . .
TIA

I have a chevy half ton work truck. Bare bones except 5.3. Has manual 4wd engage lever on the floor, but no manual hubs.

Don't know about the new ones, but mid 2000's had manual hubs on cheaper models. Upper models have a manual on/auto on setup.

The only reason the new fords have locking hubs is it takes 3/4 of a revelotion for the 4x4 to engage so if your stuck already and your front tires wont turn you can manually lock the hub so it does not need that 3/4 revolution to engage.Otherwise the manual locking hub is not used.you can just turn a knob in the cab for 4x4 .

My truck had manual or auto. Normally its on auto. But if the automatic breaks, which it will do if you don't use it all summer, you can use the manual. Or like the previous poster said, you are stuck so bad the autos won't lock

WY, OK

There are both versions on Superduties not to be confused. There is the auto with the dash shift switch which are not true manual hubs, there is also the manual with the shift lever on the floor where you still have to get out and lock or unlock your hubs. Ford had these to at least 2010, not sure on the newest gen. Half tons haven't had manual hubs since '96. I still like the true manuals especially when you need to go real slow in 2wd, keep hubs unlocked and shift into 4lo.

If you do any snowplowing with your truck you will want Manuel locking hubs. The auto's unlock and relock every time you change direction. Not good when you get hung up in a snow pile.

My 74 IH pickup had Warn automatic hubs with manual override locks. The instructions in the op manual was to leave the hubs in automatic for normal use, but to manually lock them for low range 4 wd or severe , hard pull service.

ford uses a manual locking hub like stated. auto is free till the switch is turned witch opens a vacuum line that engages the hub. they also can be turned to full manual.

My 2009 F250 has 4H-2H-4L shifter on floor. Hubs are only lock or free, no auto. This is with 6 speed manual tranny.

they still have unit bearings.

for ford and dodge 4wd solid front axle trucks, for manual locking hubs AND packable bearings, dynatrac (and spyntec. goodgle them both) sells a kit to convert back to old school, ABS compliant and all.

Jon Hagen, I think those were marketed as Lock-o-matic hubs, had a sprag clutch in them IIRC. Old IH was very innovative in the light truck market, not one but two different 5 speeds offered!

Super Duty still has the "manual" 4x4 with true manual locking hub and lever on the floor. 100% mechanical and you have to get out to lock the hubs. I believe ONLY the XL trucks have this in the current model offerings. I have an older XLT with manual 4x4.

"Electronic Shift on the fly" (ESOF) 4x4 uses electric shift transfer case and vacuum engaged hubs, no getting out and no lever. The hubs still have "Lock" on them and you can get out and turn them manually to stay engaged all the time. Most common question from ESOF 4x4 owners is "why isn't my 4x4 working"
