northeastern Ohio | My oldest boy (13) was looking at guns in the Sunday morning paper ads. He asked me why anyone would want a pistol grip on a shotgun? I am not a gun guy and could not find any info with a quick google.
He's a picture of the gun that brought the question up:

Kettle River, MN | Its pretty much for home defense. Something you throw under the pillow for when the bad guys come!!! :) |
|
|
|
Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | Yep one of those with 00 buckshot can't be beat for home defense. |

| I have one that has had more rounds through it than any other shotgun I own. Its length makes it a great pickup varmint gun. It has a nylon strap you put your hand through on the foregrip that helps a lot. It is a 12ga. which everyone thinks would be terrible, but it depends on what load you use. You can buy 1oz 6 shot at wally world for 6$ a box and have a lot of fun without killing your hand, and it still has enough lead to dispatch a ferul cat. What usually gives them a bad name is the classic, my neighbor has one, didn't show me how to hold it properly, and let me shoot it with 3" 00 buck and it hurt my hand--- well duh. |

Itta Bena Mississippi | High brass 6 shot is my load of choice. Effective enough in a close situation and not as likely to penetrate walls.

Slicker than a Yes album. | What model is yours? Pics? Is there a legal length to one of these? Been thinking of looking for one of these in the local stores or online. |

MN | no stock makes it short and easy to handle the ppistol grip gives you something to hang on to in replace of the stock. also some guns with stocks have pistol grips as well and the pistol grip helps reduce recoil in heavy turkey loads and slugs also helps with aim. |

| Mines a Mossberg cruiser with the door buster spiked end on it. Everyone told me mossbergs were junk, but this thing has never failed to shoot, even when it is really dirty from riding around in the pickup. A friend of mine bought a JIC without the door buster end, or the strap that goes around your hand on the pump, and his bucks more when you shoot it. 18" is legal here, unless you pay the $200 tax at the courthouse, then you can make'em as short as you want. The barrel on my cruiser is 18.5" |

If I had to pick a #1 shotgun over a remington 870, I'd probably go Mossberg 500/590 - I've heard they're also a popular military shotgun.

Mid Michigan | It's different because people get bored easily and will buy anything to be different so they can show their friends they have this cool looking gun that in reality is kind of a pain in the @ss. That can't defend a home any better or easier than any regular 12 guage shotgun with any kind of load in it. People watch too many action movies on tv. Can you imagine trying to deer hunt with that thing shooting from the hip? |
|
|
|

| You can get a shoulder stock to put on them if you chose too. The choke is wide open for close range shooting. Forget pheasant hunting with it if you install a shoulder stock. |

|
Iowa | only problem with that is if you got kids sleeping in the other room and your buckshot goes throught the wall and kills your kids. |

 Princeton, Indiana |
A 12" Houge composite stock set installed on the same gun would make it a much better tool for home defense. Overall length of this one is 36" and it is only 6 1/2" longer than the pistol grip model above.
Hit this link if you want to learn more. The pistol grip model in the original post is referred to as "PGO" on the website. Stands for "pistol grip only". If you dig into the information a little bit you will soon find out the experts are not very fond of PGO shotguns. Really aren't good for much other than the gee whiz cool factor.

Near-north Ontario, French River | I too was going to suggest its more of a 'coolness' thing than it is practical, but figured I'd be laughed off the site for suggesting it. As Dave points out its not going to be any more useful than a fully stalked shotgun for home defense. Without a butt stock you've got no real way of aiming, so you will basically be firing from the hip, of it you are movie not you can try it one handed and break your wrist in the process LOL FWIW... I think the roots of the 'coolness' factor can be directly traced back to the terminator movies, Arnie carried a pistol grip sawed off shot gun. |

| I don't think the numerous coons, skunks, cats, pigeons, sparrows, thought there was anything gee-wiz cool about my pistol grip shotgun. Other than how quickly I was able to get it out of the pickup.! Another thing I notice is that everytime one of my buddies acquires a new high dollar pistol (about once every two months someone wants to go to our shooting range with new said toy) They shoot up about half a box of ammo at 35 yards at the poor innocent beverage can of choice maybe 2 hits, then i retrieve my as some posters call it my gee wiz shotgun out of the pickup and eliminate its ability to hold liquid of any sort with 1 shell. Pistol $900, box of shells $30, Shotgun $350, box of shells $6. |

2 things to keep in mind on a shotgun , Minimum OVERALL length is 26" , min. barrel length is 18" . Having one shorter , will get you FREE R&B for a number of years.
R&B= room & board

Princeton, Indiana | I'm glad you like it. Glad it works the way you want it to.
If you want a crazy looking shotgun there's always the mossberg "chainsaw" -:)

Near-north Ontario, French River | Hitting a beer or pop can at 35 yards with a shotgun isn't rocket science, you'd have a decent chance of doing that with your eyes closed. |
|

|
| Exactly-- so how far out do you think my gee-wiz would be effective? |

| Love my 870.

Near Richmond, IN | I converted my Winchester to a pistol grip but after a few times shooting it, put the stock back on. I like it better with a stock on it. Thought it was easier to handle and aim. Maybe it was just what I was used to. |

|
|
East-Central IA | I've one handed shot my 870 with 3" slugs.. Didn't break my wrist. We were just messing around that day. But for home defense, a target that is 15' away, do you really need to a full stock to hit an intruder? |

Near-north Ontario, French River | Eyes open or closed? LOL |

|
Near Richmond, IN | If you're talking about me putting the stock back on, I didn't put it on to shoulder the gun, just like handling it better with a full butt stock on it. Doesn't really matter anymore anyway, I didn't want to leave it out anymore with grandkids around so now I just grab my trusty S&W 10mm!
