Subject: replace clutch brake w/o pulling transmission?

northeastern Ohio

What is the easiest way to remove a one piece clutch brake (2000 Freightliner Century w/ 10 speed)?  I picked up a Halldex two piece and installation of it looks easy.  I've heard of guys using a torch, but there is a LOT of grease up in there (it looks like the previous owner greased the throwout bearing every day)!  I've also heard of using an air chisel.  Any advice?

I have used a torch. Messy job. It has been a while, but I think used a pressure washer to clean some of the grease out.

Have had luck with a small die grinder like a dremmel and grinding my way through. Takes a long time though. Couldn't fit the cut off one up in there.

I've torched about fifty out, it's messy but it save allot of time and trouble. They are hardened and you can hardly nick them with a chisel, I didn't think you could get a dremmel up there, that's interesting. I usually cut through most of the way with a torch on both sides then use an air chisel to split it.
Good luck :-)

I've had two replaced over the years , both in t-800. Both times mechanic just used a torch. Like others have said its messy, as melting grease drips out the bottom. Wear heavy gloves, long sleeves and a face shield. If you are worried about starting a fire, just have a garden hose handy.

Eaton transmissions don't have a front seal, just reverse threads. Not sure about others though.

Not bad, just a few scars for a while. Cover your face. Make sure your driver knows how to drive with a clutch brake

What is the right way to drive with a clutch brake? Do all truck transmissions (9, 10, 13 speeds, etc) have them? Must not be doing anything too wrong, as we haven't failed one in 10 yrs on same truck, but may be changing trucks, soon.

Don't push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor when the truck is moving in gear, ever. That goes for when you are stopped at an intersection with it in gear too. What happens is say the truck wants to roll and the transmission is in gear it will spin the transmission input shaft. If you have the clutch pedal all the way down that will put a huge amount of torque on the clutch brake and release bearing and will ruin it after a while.

So, only time to push the pedal all the way down is when you are completely stopped, going from neutral to 1st gear. Once you are in gear rolling or the truck is trying to roll (on a slope) ease up and let the pedal up an inch or two. Should last the life of the clutch if used properly.

This goes for the old mechanical clutch Verstatiles and Steigers too.

My Ford L9000 was not working right and stopped at a local HD shop to inquire about it. Owner said he would put one in for about $40 plus the part.
For $40 I would not even roll under the truck. May be worth checking what someone would do it for.
