Thumb of Michigan | What are the odds that Montoya could hit a jet dryer on a 2 and a half mile track?

German Valley, IL | Harry Hogge: All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car. Cole Trickle: Hit the pace car? Harry Hogge: Hit the pace car. Cole Trickle: What for? Harry Hogge: Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect.

West Union, IOWA FLOLO Farm 52175 | I bet they have a better fire suppression rig on hand,next time.

You know it would have to be Montoya or Patrick. They both hit most everything on the track in most races! Lucky someone was not killed.

SWOH | They would've never got him out...I wonder how much heat that fire suit can take? Glad the truck driver got out ok, that must've been a hell of a hit for him, especially since I'm sure he wasn't prepared for it at all. If they restart this thing there's gonna be some nervous drivers driving over that part of the track, It might not be coming apart while they're cleaning it up but I bet it does when they get up to speed going over it. Potholes at Daytona??? That would never happen, right??? Will the safety truck drivers have to wear the Hanns device now?
boa628 |
| ||
SWOH | My thought is what would happen if that would've been in front of a packed grandstand and sprayed jet fuel in the stands....I bet they come up with a different track cleaner in the near future.
pat-michigan |

Thumb of Michigan | OK-I'll be the first to ask what many are thinking. Who knew that the Jet dryer was based on a John Deere combine?
semosandfarmer |
| ||
East Prairie, MO | I couldn't believe somebody didn't hook a chain to the front of the darn thing and pull it into the grass to keep from cooking the track!
smartwick08 |
| ||
Minot, ND | its for drying the track, not really cleaning it. dont know a better way to dry a track thats better then a jet engine, they may have a vehicle following closer now or make it to where they have to pull below yellow/white line.
smartwick08 |
| ||
Minot, ND | the tire wire flat and the rims would have left grooves in the melted pavement, doing more damage then what it did.

SWOH | They usually use them to dry the track, they said the one he hit was just blowing off the top of the track...which I've seen them do lots of times while I'm at the track. I don't think they were actually drying anything at the time, could be wrong. I bet they won't have the jet dryers on the track anymore when the cars are on the track.

NE SoDak | how's that? blowing stuff out the back?

53916 | northmofarm - 2/27/2012 21:25 You know it would have to be Montoya or Patrick. They both hit most everything on the track in most races! Lucky someone was not killed. Just seems like fitting karma that it's either a Mexican or a woman hitting everything with a car. As the saying goes in a paper mill I used to work in....... "when there's a female driver, there's no survivors"

East Prairie, MO | I don't mean 10 minutes later, I mean right away when if first got going BEFORE the track was melted and all the tires were burned off.

southern MN | So what do they do next week to top that??? I was just thinking early in the week, JPM was kinda quiet last year, didn't hit nearly as much stuff as he did the years before...... How many jokes does he get for trying to bump-draft the drier truck? Sure glad no one was hurt much. That coulda been really bad with that much jet fuel involved for either the truck driver or JPM - heck even if it had happened in front of some stands instead of out back in the open.... --->Paul
smartwick08 |
| ||
Minot, ND | well would u want to be in a truck that has 200 gallons of jet fuel on board and is on fire? the truck caught on fire about as soon as rescue got there.

southern MN | That's a big track, takes a few seconds to get there. I'd prefer the first responders check out people and make sure folks are safe & healthy. By the time they were helping the triuck driver out of the truck, flames were going. Like, right away. Pretty hard to walk on that track with the steep angle, makes any manuver a bit more time consuming. If you saw the fuel pouring out of the tank, it ran for quite a while, and was already burning when the firt helper ran up. Moving the truck at that point, even if that responder was super human and coulda pushed it by hand, would have spread fuel across a much wider area of the track, with flames already on the fuel Don't think that woulda been good, a wider area of flames.... I was burning brush a couple weeks ago, used 2.5 gallons of diesel to get it going. I couldn't stand the heat at 15 feet. This was almost 10 times the fuel, considering the truch tanks as well, which could blow in the heat & spread hot fuel all around. Nice to watch on TV and - just like my first thought too - can't you move that thing??? But if you or I were standing there on the track with a chain, I think it would look a _lot_ different as to how close one could get.... Get the foam and water on the flame as fast as you can, to cool it & get it out. After checking out everyone's safety, that's probably the best bang for the buck. Despite my initial reaction, just like yours, to 'do something', I think they all reacted really really good to deal with that deal as best and quickly as possible! --->Paul
