West Texas | Unregistered Lurkers? A couple hundred thousand, give or take a few thousand. Registered Users? I saw user #29xxx post something a few days ago. I'd guess we'll hit 30k soon, if not already. Perhaps the Mods will give an exact count. Incidentally, you're #12656.

Slicker than a Yes album. | I don't think #1 exists. It was something to do with registering software, according to the story I remember.

53916 | The numbers just mean people are sheep. What makes it a good site is the quality of answers a guy can get when a question is asked. Some days it is a good site; some days when no one cares it is not.

I'm betting #1 is "admin" or "sysop". Admin is more common nowadays but sysop was the common term in the 80s and 90s.

You joined in 2006. I've been on the 'net for almost a decade before the WWW was born and can remember when I could type as fast as a 300 baud modem could display text. And 300 baud was cutting edge. The upgrade to 1200 baud was smokin. 2400 baud wasn't as good, and 14.4k was hardcore. Old is relative. And I'm the ripe old age of 43.

Elmira, Ontario | Itchy - 2/28/2012 21:23 do you remember what year you joined? The first post of mine I could find using search was march 29, 2006. I believe that was the day this version of the board went live.

Ah yes, the version of this board built in Frontpage. Whenever Dave was busy in the field the board would crap out because he didn't have time to pull old messages off the page. That said, my wording was very carefully chosen. I meant the current software being used went live in 2006.

Here I am grumpy because the wifi in the hotel I'm in is flaky causing my tablet to lose its connection. How far we've come! I remember the upgrade to 9600 baud. Huge deal.

Especially with compressable data like text. And remember knowing the differences between X,Y,and Zmodem transfers? And why a 32bit CRC was a big deal when dloading binary files long distance for avoiding data corruption?
