Subject: Need a Governor for Homeade Irrigation Motor

Vincennes, IN
Last winter we took this 350 out of an old GMC pickup we had and made a propane irrigation power unit out of it. It worked out real well other than I need some sort of governor to hold the RPMs steady under various loads. Right now I have to leave the end gun on all the time or when it shuts off and the load on the engine decreases, the RPMs go up and consequently the voltage for the pivot goes too high. Anyone have a source for some type of governor that would work?

Find an old combine salvage yard. Lots of combines used automotive engines with belt drive governors. I've also heard some types of cruise controls can be used as a governor.

Get one from a later model Gleaner "G" which used a 350 GM engine.

Sweet rig.

How about the little electric solenoid used to bump up throttle rpm when the vehicles A/C is turned on at idle? When the endgun is on, the throttle is kicked up. This bump up may need to be attached to the throttle cable for proper use.

Before we get to that, don't forget the shield over the drive shaft.  Also, I am curious about the unit behind it.

Back on topic ...

I think I'd try a universal cruise control like this one from JC Whitney

Last I looked Valu-Bilt had a belt driven universal governor for just such applications.

They now believe its made of silver mixed with gold though.

For a very accurate electronic governor option, look at Governors America Corp. We have several of their governors on irrigation engines where the engine is pulling the pump and a generator. These governors, once tuned, will only vary +/- 2-3 rpms which is pretty nice on a generator.

I think this outfit makes a governor that you could use. Seems like things are going electronic now. http://www.foleyengines.com/HandyForms/Long_Range_Universal_Governo...

Govenors America can govern your engine sensing either RPM or generator voltage/frequecy.

Thanks for all the info guys. I knew someone on here would know which direction to point me.

Mike SE IL, the unit behind this one is a Ford 300 that I picked up for next to nothing at one of Groff's auctions. Wasn't sure if it would run or not. Brought it home, hooked it to the LP tank and it pured like a kitten. Built a new cart to put it on and mated it up with the PTO pump I had been running with a tractor and now have a pretty nice setup that I run a soft hose traveler with. It makes for much better sleep at night not having to worry about a tractor running it with no one around. And yes, I do need to get a shield made to cover that drive shaft.

Rock Road, it really isn't any louder than most other setups around here. The square tubing we made the manifolds out of kinda acts as a muffler I think. Its a lot quieter than the Lister that one of our neighbors uses that sounds like a freight train is coming through the house all night.

I bought another GM 427 out of a wrecked ten wheeler from a fellow NATer here that I plan to make into another unit for a pivot this winter.

One of the chevy engined combines would supply a governor with all the brackets and pulleys. I built a standby generator set using an automotive engine and belt drive governor. Because it, like your pump engine, needs to run unattended, I installed a rev limiter on the ignition system in case the governor or a drive belt fails and kicks the engine to wide open throttle.. An ignition rev limiter from your local speed shop will save the engine and whatever it drives , from a high rpm runaway.

This limiter is designed for race applications where it limits rpm to 6-7 or 8,000 rpm, but set it in 4 cyl mode and it will limit rpm on your V8 to 3000-3500 or 4000 rpm.

Re: Rev limiter.

When we used to pump water we always ran a murphy switchgauge vacuum gauge hooked to the safety switch and set it so if it fell out of a couple inches range it would kill it.

Always heard stories about the drive shaft falling off or the pump shaft breaking, didn't want to come back to the engine laying in pieces either.
