Subject: JD 4430 Quad

QUAD RANGE TRANNY!!When i shift with the clutch, the forward and backward gears work in my tranny. I have all my ranges, but i only have half the gears. My 2 and 4 gears work, so i only have half of the gears. The side to side shifting, with no clutch, if i do that my tranny locks up and the tractor stops immediatly. I disconected my side to side shifting the one with no clutch and it works, but i have half the gears. WHat is wrong?

your side to side shift is called (high-low) this has two clutches in it and a planetary gear setup. There is a serious problem with it and it should be looked a as soon as possable, the sooner the cheeper,

Its been happening for 15 years, and i bought it used, but if i disconect the high/low lincages it works fine so i just found this fourm and was wondering what was wrong?

You will need to split the tractor and remove the 2 spd. The quad range transmission is a synchro range with a 2 spd power shift in between the clutch and transmission input shaft.
My 4430 locked up just the same way. In my case someone forgot to put the thrust washer on the clutch pack and it slowly machined the hub which broke the spring, thus locking the clutches...Very bad. New parts are very expensive. I had my local machine shop make me a new hub end. It's used almost everyday and 13 years later it is still running.
Sometimes the bolts back out of the planetary pack which is also bad. I suggest you fix it soon. It's pretty easy for someone with some mechanical experience.
Also replace the engine and pto clutch, and rear seal while you have it split. Change all filters and clean screen as they probably have grindings floating around.

Several sources sell rebuilt two speeds such as abilene machine not terribly expensive.

Hi, If I have a synchro 4430 and 4230, can I make them into a quad range?
