Subject: Gas tank to diesel

Needing on road diesel storage for harvest time. Have 2 gas tanks on a stand that have not been used for several yrs. and would like to use 1 for diesel but have been told that is a no no due to gas residual.

Has anyone done this with any success?

I think you need to fill it, immediately drain all the diesel and give it to me so you won't have any problems! LOL

Seriously, I don't see any problem, I've used pickup tanks for gas and switched them to diesel without any problems. Just make sure it is completely empty, including the filter and hose. Since it hasn't been used for years, I would look the tank over real good for any pitting or rusting so you won't have a sprinkler when you fill it. I'd also install a water trap/drain valve (with safety plug) to remove any condensation in the bottom of the tank.

Why not just take it and get it cleaned? If you mess up a pickup you'll wish you would've had it cleaned.

It shouldn't hurt anything, I know folks that put a little gas in their diesel trucks.

This is true. Do you think the fuel haulers get their tanks cleaned with something special every time they change products? I would be more worried about rust or sludge than gas residue.

My main fuel barrel was used for gas when I bought it and I switched it to diesel. Just ran all of the gas out of it and then swapped out the filter. Never had any issues.

I've heard this before and never understood it, actually knew a guy looking for some grav tanks and wouldn't buy them unless they were placard for diesel, didn't want any that had gas in them. Couldn't convince him otherwise and he paid more but oh well. We use 5 gallon jug back and forth between diesel and gas all the time, wouldn't be afraid to do it with a big tank, in fact we did once--our old leaded fuel tank was switched to our highway diesel tank 15-20 years ago.

When fuel comes thru a pipeline the different companies get their allotment from the different parts of the wave. Places that want cheaper fuel get it on the front part of the flow where it might be contaminated from the gas or whatever that was in the pipeline. Price and quality goes up from there.

Or it sounded good when the gas man was explaining it to me.

They run pigs of water between the different fuels in pipelines, shouldn't be any contamination other than possible water, which does happen from time to time. I just don't buy that an empty 200 gallon or larger tank will cause any problems when you switch fuels, heck even if it had say 10 gallons in it, it would be so diluted it wouldn't matter.
