Subject: Freightliner question

Parsons Kansas
I've got a '94 Freightliner. The RPM and speedometer sticks. When you rool up to a stop sign and happen to look at either one of the one may still say 65 or the RPM may say 1500 RPM. Is there a fix for this.

Years ago dad had a '78 Chevy pickup. That speedometer would do the same thing. He would take it out of the dash, take the cable out of it, and put some graphit ( I butchered that spelling i know) on it and it would work for awhile. Then he would have to do it again. Would this work on the Freightliner? I haven't taken it apart yet, thought I would ask here before I tear into it. Thanks Darren.

I also have a 1994 freightliner, and had the same issues. They are electronically controlled, and a new set of gauges is pretty pricey so I bought a set out of a wrecked truck for cheap off ebay. I think you can get reman gauges for 100 bucks off there also.

Really? Electronically controlled definatly complicates a little. May have to go to the salvage yard as well. Thanks for the info. Darren

Both of those gauges didn't go out at the same time, nor did their respective sending units. One of two things is going on: 1) a shared power or ground to the gauges is faulty, or 2) there is a loss of communication to the gauges assuming they are data bus driven.

Translation: I doubt replacing the gauges will help anyone except the parts department.

Now that you mention it both guages messing up is odd. I'll have to do some checking of grounds and power supplies. I sure wouldn't of imagined that these were electrical guages. Thanks Darren.

I have a new in box speedo for that truck, in does not have an odometer built in just mph. Id make you a deal if you get towards wichita you could look at it or I could email you some pics. Mine was the gauges, I ended up with two speedo's. Mine would stick around 35-50mph then when stopped tap on the gauge face then it would fall to 5mph. Then do again.

Chebanse, IL.....

We have same problem w/FL, though a later model. Some days both gauges work fine. Some days the tach hangs up & doesn't go above 1000 rpm. Some days the speedo hangs & shows only 20 mph @ max. Some days both gauges are dead.

Started acting like this a couple of yrs ago &  I figured something was on it's way out & would soon die exposing the culprit. Well, that hasn't happened yet, problems still occur routinely. I didn't realize it was such a common (relatively) problem in FL.

Thanks all. Hopefully, someone else will chime in and give all of us a few more ideas.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but do the 'Shaker gauges not float freely (as in anywhere in their sweep) when the key is off? Yours hang at mid sweep... but the short of what I'm saying... there is a power supply problem to those two gauges...

Yes, they are of course electric gauges.

We have a dead truck you can take the gauges out of if you want.

Now that I think about it, the tach in it was doing the same thing. Would not go above 1400.

Speedo works as far as I know.

Not a solution, but we put 11Rx24s on the drivers and ours speed is off, and also bounce around, so we put a $100 garmin in for speed. Also a Volvo.
