Subject: John Deere 60 ............

I know this will be a stupid question to everyone but me, I had to replace the batteries and did not write down how I took them out. I have looked in my owners manual but there is no diagram on how to reconnect them. So I figured I would rather look like a fool asking than blowing my head off hooking them up wrong.
Thanks,
rw

If you don't know if it's still the original positive ground, or if it has been changed, just check the size of the clamps on the posts. The positive is larger diameter than the negative, and you can tell which way it was before. If you have it backwards you will be stretching one clamp open and pulling one down a lot tighter than normal. If you have it right the clamps should fit fairly well.

I think mcfarm is right although I always have to get out the op manual for my AR to double check when I put a battery in to start it. These were orignially a two 6 volt battery system combined to make 12 volts. Since I don't start mine too often I just put in a single small twelve volt and it starts fine. Less trouble hooking up and without the added expense of keeping a couple of rarely used 6 volt batteries around the farm.

If you are using two 6 volts hook ground strap to positive of first battery then negative to positive of second then negative to starter.

Yes this is what I have, so I will go ahead and hook them up. I had broke a post off once tapping the cable back on to the battery of my truck, so now I always take a round reamer to open them up, so I could not check that way.

I also checked my om it says for batteries, pg. 13, 25, 105 and nothing about the order in which to hook up the cables. I will let you know when I get it running and post a photograph.
Again thanks to everyone,
rw

Just buy a 12 volt battery and be done with it, rather than hooking up a pair of six volts. A 60 will start just fine with a single 12 volt. You'll save money on batteries, and have a lot less confusion in how to hook them up.

A 60 will start better with a single 12 volt.

I know that is not the way it is supposed to be but that is what experience tells me.

Batteries are in right, but still not running, I can not get it to roll over. I took an idiot light and have power to the back of the switch, power to the coil, and power to the post the two wires connect to down by the starter. I have pulled the spart plugs and rolled it over so I know the motor is not froze up. either the starter is bad, or the batteries were not charged all the way up or the switch is bad. When I step on the starter pedal, it just does not feel like it use to. So I have ordered a new switch and I am waiting for it to come in the mail. Or I will have my wife pull me around the drive and see if it will fire.

I also need to find a repair manual on the pto. I have bought several parts for it and now need to get it back together. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks, Randal
