Well I currently have a 03 6.0 1500hd I like the truck, dont like the mileage. I bought a 24' gooseneck trailer to tow livestock in. could see loads of 10,000 pounds including trailer, but most will be withing 5-7k. I think the 6.0 would pull it but I think Duramax would pull it much better. My current truck has 183k miles and the d max i am looking at is an 02 with 275 k miles. I would have to payout about 2-3 grand to trade up to this truck, even though its older with more miles, but its a duramax. So, Should I go for this deal? how were the earlier dmaxes far as logevity and reliability? It had new injectors put in at one point. Thanks for helping me out.

The injectors were the main issue with the 01-04 Duramax's. How long ago were they replaced? With that many miles I would want to make sure you have the entire maintenance history on the truck. They will run a long time but, like anything else, they need to taken care of. If it has ever been chipped I would stay away from it with that many miles unless it's a steal. It is not cheap to rebuild an Allison transmission.

If you want a duramax it needs to be a 2005 to 2007 old body to get the most trouble free stay away form the older ones

Personally, I wouldn't pay that kind of extra for a DMax with that many miles . . . . . .
For the extra the diesel option is costing, plus the extra expense of filters for a diesel vs gas, and the extra expense of diesel fuel - I'd think long and hard before I bought another diesel truck.
UNLESS, you are pulling that livestock trailer most every day  . . . . . .
If you are occasionally towing (couple times month) - I'd stick with a gas job -
No doubt the duramax/allison combo is a towing beast, great set up, but it should have a return on investment. The only way to get that is towing most every day.
As others have posted, if I were to continue to want a diesel, I'd look for an '06 or '07 classic, with around 100,000 miles or less, then run'em up to 300,000 miles . . .   . . .
I"ve had diesel pickups since the GM 5.7 L and on my 3rd DMax - next truck will be a gas . . . .

If its cheap enough and well maintain then yes it would be alot better than what you have. 01-early04 got the best mpg. Have some check the balance rates for high return if you can. If they are is spec then, buy clean, use the OEM stlye fuel filters and you will get another 200K out of the injectors. 01-early 04 don't have any EGR unless is was A Cali. truck. IMO 06-early07 are the best yrs of trucks for the duramax.

Well, I figure with the mileage I am currently getting, the duramax would net me less cost per mile even with higher diesel prices. Unless gas were to drop significantly and diesel stay high. Sure Id like to look for one with 100000, but I don't want payments on the thing either. All of my 3 vehicles are free and clear, and I'd like to keep it that way. I did find an 01 with 178k on it, for a lower price. I may go take a look at that one.

Tangent, OR
The mileage difference will not make up the differences in cost. Period.
