Subject: OOOPS...tractor and planter into the lake

Bow Island, Alberta
This happened in our area last week. Someone was driving the tractor and bean planter across a flooded (closed)road and ended up in the lake.

I think I would drove how many miles out of the way it was.

It looks like the tractor is setup for 20' or 22'?

The only way he could have done that.........is if he was coming over that hill full bore while texting his old lady. It seems incomprehensible to even try to go through standing water pulling a planter. I'd be afraid to get the seed wet.

I can show the bills from the dealer on our 4960. I paid for the right to badmouth that tractor.

It was really a shame too. I was so excited to get a cherry 4960 with 3800 hours. Right after we got it home the excitement went away. There wasn't many parts on that tractor that didn't get worked on except the transmission and rear end. When it left it was lurching forward in park. Most people say that isn't a big deal but to stand there and watch your tractor that you know is in park just sit there and jump forward is real unnerving.

Too bad as it was a nice driving tractor. Rode well and steered tight. Owned it 4 years and could have bought a top of the line diesel 4x4 pickup with what we spent on repairs on it.

Cramming the air intake and muffler under the hood didn't help things. Ours was just a nightmare. Rebuilt the front end, pumpkin twice, engine had just been rebuilt when we bought it and we redid it once after the under the hood air intake's seals let go and it got a mouthful of dust. When it left water from the radiator was coming out the blowby tube something fierce. The electric hitch controls gave us fits also. Fuel shutoff got replaced 3 or 4 times. Almost a yearly thing. Water pump went out. We got lucky there and caught it in time. Front driveshaft needed reworked on a yearly basis. There's plenty more that went wrong, broke, tore up or blew up..

8000 series, even the very first ones, were 10 times the tractor a 60 series was. Selling our 60 was one of the best monetary decisions we've ever made.

I would like to see a pic when the water goes down. Was there a washout that threw him in the ditch? To me it looks like the road is straight you would have thought he could have drove straight across. using the exposed road as a guide unless booze or todays technology (cell phone) was the cause to take the ditch.

Years ago we had a flood here and I drove through flowing water 2' deep to get some people out of an area that was going to flood. After the water went I saw where 1/2 of the road had washed away, the hole was several feet deep. I guess someone was watching over me, I couldn't have missed the washout by more than a few inches.

I'm bad to be on the phone or distracted some of the time but in that case I would have been off the phone and focused entirely on getting to the other side. Seat cushion probably firmly gripped by by buttocks.

Daytime or at night? I'd think at night it would have been harder to judge the water hazard as easily, no matter what lighting he had.

maybe auto steer LOL was not working, :) no matter what the story, in that part of the country, if any of us had the water problem they got out there, and ya had dry land that you could plant on the other side of the water, I don't think any of us would not have drove into/onto that road to go try to get some planted.

I have a "planter in the water" story. Got a group of three brothers that farm here locally, was led by their dad at the time. Had high water like now and had an 800 ac field ready to plant, but had 6 ft. of water to go through and a bridge involved also. AS the water was rising, they went and staked the creosote bridge with pols to mark it and hung cotton picker final drives off it to keep it down. 4 weeks later, it was time to plant.

They took four JD 8630 artic's, 8R wide folding planters, built a trailer to carry the seed above the water. Took a rope and tied the door to the light in the back of the cab to keep it open, and unpinned the back glasses, all in case one ran off course. Last step was to take tension off the fam belts. Water passed just above the floorboards, planted and got out the same way. Also, once harvested the same way, except no trucks, moored a barge on the riverbank, built a chute hung on a cherry picker boom and loaded 800 ac of wheat on a barge.

Looks like it's a mounted planter, could it have made the front lighter enough to loose a bit more control in the water? Can't tell if it's a MFWD either. If it was I'd have turned it on going through that.
