Plain City, Ohio
Have a 97 345 JD lawn tractor that seems to be experiencing fuel starvation at full throttle..... Will run choked or low idle for a bit but at full throttle it wants to die..... Changed fuel filter and helped for one mowing but that was it...... Am of the opinion that it is either the fuel pump or a dried out fuel line....
Thoughts?????????

replace the cheaper first, being the fuel line. Over time, the lines seem to degrade from the inside out. You could also have a piece of rubber from said line stuck in the carb somewhere. If possible, put the filter as close to the carb as possible. Good luck.

Western NY
Check for visible leaks and check to see if fuel pump is pulsing..... We have had a ton of problems this year with gas!!!! I don't know what has changed from last year to this year, but I do know that at least 40-50% of the problems with lawn mowers at the parts counter have been related to fuel. We have a fuel sample set aside in the shop that we filled to about 2 inches in the sample bottle. In said bottle, after a couple days, you can visibly see the ethanol seperated from the gasoline at the top of the sample. If you aren't treating your fuel, start doing so now. All small engines should be treated (fert pumps, weed eaters, push lawn mowers, ride on's, etc.). It is getting to be like Low Sulphur in Diesel.

I just had same problem and replaced the fuel line from tank to the fuel pump. Take the line off the pump and turn it over to see if you get a good stream of gas.

We have a 445 which had similar symptons. It would die, let sit for a second and it would fire right back up. Turned out to be the timing gear. The gear itself isn't metallic, its some sort of fibre/plastic, they wear out and can sometimes move on the shaft. Google something along the lines of "JD 345 stalling", wouldn't surprise me if you have a similar problem.

Th problem could be the ignition module. Does it backfire when starting ?

Had a 335 act like that. Item #10 in pic was the culprit.

Another thought would be around the vent on the fuel tank cap - is it plugged up?

Brother in law had one with plastic shavings in the fuel tank. Would stall and start back up. Couldn't get it cleaned out. Changed the tank. Problem solved.
