Subject: Triton 5.4 longevity?

just a tish NE of central ND
The other day someone had a post about rebuilding a triton 5.4 engine. With good maintance, what kind of life expectancy can be expected from a Triton 5.4 in 2000 Ford half ton only occasionally pulls a 16foot livestock trailer 60 - 100 mile loaded and back empty, and other than that is has regular farm and parts duties(broad spectrum question , I know) ...... How long do they have a reputation for running before failure/heavy oil consumption/ or repair is required. That long timing chain makes me wonder how long they last too.Im talking repair issues other than the spark plug thread damage and the broken manifold bolts which is so common on them.
Slow cold day around here it seems.....LOL!

250K isn't a problem as long as the spark plugs stay put. Mine had 240K and was fine except for that same plug spitting out twice. The 4.6L's last hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles in taxis and patrol cars and it is more or less just a smaller 5.4L.

have a friend with a 99 that has 260k of hard miles. As somebody said the spark plugs tend to spit out for no apparent reason, there is a rethread kit that doesnt require head removal.

No personal experience, but what I have read on the net is that early mod motors had only 2-3 sparkplug threads in the aluminum heads and would pull out those few fragile aluminum threads. There is a repair kit to install a steel thread insert without taking the head off and later engines come with more threads in the head to lessen the problem.

I believe my son's 97 3/4ton has the 5.4, it has 260k on it and they are put on by a young man. He still has the truck and it runs strong.

All 2V modulars up to '03 had 4 threads in the heads, from over tightening the replacements the plugs can shoot out of the head taking the 4 threads with them. There are several different kits to fix it after it happens, if you are lucky enough to have 1 of the front 4 shoot it can be done with the head on the engine, if it is one of the back 4 the head needs to come off. Usually before they spit you will get what sounds like an exhaust leak type of sound. There is no recall for it.

have 2002 5.4 with 91,000 miles. Ford has 100,000 mile warantee on plugs. I have heard of plugs lasting much longer. I guess i don't want to take it in to dealer until I have to. comments please --  mike

I had an 02 F150 I ran to 167k mi and I think literally the only thing I ever did to the motor (other than oil changes) was to swap out the plugs at a little over 100k on it. Still wish I had that truck. I also had an 05 F150 & ran it to 90k before trading on my powerstroke F250. No motor issues on that one, either.

I always thought the 5.4 was a great motor for a 1/2 ton truck. I never loaded them up that much, but they always handled our bumper hitch 7000 lb flatbed & cattle trailers without any issues. I can see where it would be underpowered in an F250 or F350, though.

There is no such warranty, the recommended change interval is 100K, which is too high should be more like 60K.
