Subject: Clutch not releasing Steiger tractor

Texas/New Mexico Stateline
I have a ST310 and it has a fairly new clutch in it. It works just fine most of the time, about 2 inches of freeplay and the clutch brake works when you push it to the floor. So it seems to be adjusted right. Once in a while it won't release. Kinda unnerving when you are wanting to stop and it just keeps going. I'll shut it off right quick and get it out of gear, start it back up and it may or may not be still acting up. Maybe go right into gear like it should or just grind. May plow all afternoon and it never hang up, but that one time.....

I'm wondering if there might be dirt packed in there somewhere, or the brake fluid has air or something. The air in the line doesn't seem plausible since it may go to working right immediately. Any ideas.

Reach your hand up into the bellhousing and see if there are any pieces in there. Sounds like the springs are coming out of the disc. A common issue with trucks.

Also suspect worn master or slave cylinder seals. If the worn cup seals instantly, the clutch works correctly, if not the clutch will short stroke and not release. BTDT on my KM 325.

Agree with Jon Hagen and scottnelsen. I would check slave cylinder and master cyl. The slave cylinder is a common part at most parts supply. Usually I just put a new one on and throw the old one away. Have hardly no troubles with clutch itself. Most issues are with slave/master cly.

We had an ST310 and had the same problem. Jon Hagen and scottnelson are right. We put both on new and never had a problem after that. Clutches in those tractors were pretty bulletproof.

Thanks for the advice guys. That does sound reasonable. It would sure explain the intermittent problem. Anybody happen to know the part # for each one? They are both pretty old, I wouldn't mind chunking them like Paul suggested.
