I think everyone had earworms this year-I sprayed my corn 3 times and still had them. No problem-just break of at damage line.

The answer really depends on your taste and the specific variety planted. We plant a variety that pretty much tastes good from the young to the slightly old side. I have customers that ask me to call them when the corn is on the older side for canning, and I also have some that prefer it younger. We try to have two bins at the stand...one young and one old, because tastes vary. I also sell to the Latino markets in the area. Latino's prefer corn on the REALLY old side. I'm completely sold out of that, so I didn't have any for the picture.

As far as worms are concerned, you'll be fine...even if you eat the worm that's feasting on your corn. We seem to be training a society that doesn't want us to use chemicals, but at the same time wants absolutely pest free produce. Ain't gonna happen...sorry.

Okay by me.  I'm sure they are a good source of protein.

and if you have a lot of worms, you might even have enough for a meal.       Laughing

Veg oil on silks early will prevent worms. Ok I guess unless you have a large patch.

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
We spray 3 or 4 times a week. Everyone I know from Delaware to Florida sprays every other day from 10% silk until the silk is brown. Sometimes we still have a few. By the way, I still don't see how you guys choke down that SE sweet corn. yuk.

Sumner GA, Located in southwest GA,
Yep, know what you mean, local veggie boys had 20-30 acres below us, every other day hear the spray plane. They didn't harvest hardly any of it. I went down there nearly every day for two weeks, picked a few hundred ears to eat and put up, actuall kinda nice like that, cool, comfortable, and did it in a half a hour at the worst.

Slicker than a Yes album.
What's worse than finding a worm in your corn?

Finding half a worm!!

Now Rafe, not everyone has a refined palate like you. ;-)

I bought some 378 White (from another grower) to sell alongside the Honey Select because everyone kept asking for white corn. I had to throw a good bit of it out because no one liked it.

I assume that you have tried Honey Select and don’t like it? What’s your favorite SH2 yellow?

I've been trying to keep up with the bugs. I think the heat is making it much worse this year. This is the first year that I have had a tough time with Sap Beetles. I also really don't know how it's even possible that I have any corn at all to sell with no rain.

My favorite used to be 277, but I think I like Honey Select better, now. Kernels are more tender, Sometimes the 277 seems TOO sweet.

Jon, a really excellent white is "Treasure" but I don't know if it is still available. Was very susceptible to rust.

You need to run some Honey Select up to Rafe, Jon! Maybe we can sway him, I think it's 25% SH2.

Hillsdale Co. Michigan
Have come across 1 worm so far this year and haven't applied anything... Just started hand picking earlier this week. Coons ate plenty and I dispatched plenty of coons... The 2170 is making a 9 inch ear but only going about 1 3/4 across w/ 16 rows... Taste and texture are excellent and my customer base thus far seems to be quite happy... We'll see how it sells this weekend and at a few of the grocery stores I supply.

I generally have to bite the bullet and break out the warrior by Mid-August silking corn... I try to hold off as long as possible.

Found my first Jap beetle yesterday munching on silk...

For as hot and humid and dry as it has been I am quite surprised at the low bug pressure I've seen.

This was just 12 rows of stuff for family & friends-hand sprayed with 2 gallon pump sprayer-I am not doing commerical stuff.

I have had years in the past where we only sprayed the silks once just to keep jap beetles off.
