we have one, has about 1800 hrs on it, anyway dad was running in some soft conditions last yr and lost a drive motor, cat dealer came out n fixed it in the field. Mechanic said if we kept running it in those conditions we would be fixing more of them. Ours is turned up some, in good conditions it has plenty of power. Pretty decent prayer for the money, ours is a 80fboom, 1000 gallon tank model, had new tires when we got it last yr, paid around 62,000 for it. It pry doesn't ride as good as a deere and isn't as quiet, but we don't use it that much anyway so for us it works good.

That was the sprayer designed by gallenberg and later bought by willmar - I would say it probably rides better than a JD especially if you have height valves at each corner (Willmar did change it to just one valve at some point). That said, the larger solution tanks and larger engine (went from the original 600 to 1000 gallons and 5.9L to 8.3L engine) meant something else was going to be the weak link. Since the sprayer has a lot of the weight on the rear, the rear wheel motors do most of the work. They made the front motors smaller mainly because additional power up front would just result in spinning tires (ie. the work isn't spread out so evenly). However, I'm not sure they have any worse wheel motor problems than other sprayers though and all the radial piston motors are expensive.

Thanks,

Pat

Did the motor or the hub fail ? The only thing that we have seen happen time to time is the stub shaft spline strips between the hub and motor. This is a cheap easy fix. These are nice machines. The cab and operator controls are a bit of a cluster %*&!.

They have a very good ride. Downside is that the planetary hubs are a bit on the weak side for that machine, the input shaft is common to fail under high torque applications but at least they are fairly inexpensive and straightforward to replace. Not the quietest cab I've been in. Hyd motors generally are pretty good, but I've heard that replacements if needed are getting difficult to come by. My opinion anyways.

I think Pat H is talking about the 8400 series Willmar. They are a different animal to the 8500 and far superior in my opinoin.

I have had one for 5 years. In this time I did break one input shaft IT WAS $60(big deal) . And 1 hour to install. The next time it would be much less. I have had one wheel motor go out. Hydro service rebuilt it in 45 mins for $400 it took 1/2 and hour to pull the motor off. All you do is pull 6 lines and 2 bolts. I really find it hard to believe that ANYTHING rides better then a eagle. And yes the cab is load but at 13 mph you are not in it for long and 80 acres is done. Millions of times better then my old JD 6500

NW MN
We have an 8400, and works fine. Heavy in the rear with 1000 gallons. It's loud compared to newer brands I'm sure. We bought new booms from Jim at Hydra-fab in Antigo, WI and he comes by in the fall for a service check. He would be a good one to know the good points and bad about the Willmars. I don't have his number handy at the moment.

Thanks remmy - I guess I thought all the 8000 willmars were some sort of gallenberg. I looked at a few pics on tractorhouse and it looks like the 8500 is similar, but I didn't see shock absorbers - are there a bunch of other differences? I thought agco/willmar just kept putting a newer looking hood on them and generally cheapening up the fairly expensive gallenberg concept (not that it was perfect though).

thanks,

Pat

Pat H, Most people think like you about the eagle series from Willmar. I'll break down the model list.
8200--215hp cummins 8.3 800 gallon ss tank 90 ft gallenberg boom, gallenberg drive system
8400--250 hp cummins 8.3 1000 gallon ss tank 90 or 120ft gallenberg boom, gallenberg drive system
8100--this is the model that willmar started to cheapen up the machine. 200hp cummins 5.9 800gal ss tank 80-90ft willmar boom from the ranger series, drive system is all willmar
8500--this is very similar the the 8100 but a heavier drive system, 200hp 5.9 1000gal ss tank 80-90ft willmar boom but it did have a heavier drive system and faster road speed than the 8100.

It's very confusing that the 8200 had more hp than the 8500.

I think that the 82-8400 series were about the most reliable hydro machine on the market. They used high end components that worked well. The price tag also showed this. Their biggest downfall was that the cab interior layout was very simple and crude. They also did not have a very high road speed.
