I have a jd receiver and monitor in my sprayer for guidance. Would like to get auto steer and mapping but jd's seems a little pricey. Does anyone know if any other systems would work with the jd or would it be easier to scrap what I have and start over.

the most expensive part of the deere system is the receiver. you already have that so you may want to look into the deere system. your receiver may need an upgrade but at most that may cost $450

I think it depends on what you really want to do:
- auto steer only
- auto steer + yield monitoring/mapping + variable rate +....
and what your required precision is: WAAS, BEACON, Omnistar, RTK?

Also consider which autosteer you want:
- dedicated + hydraulic
- electric (JD ATU, EZ-Steer, Ontrac)

I guess I should of added, that I would like to keep it as simple as I can, and the least expensive that I can.

There are programs available to sell your JD stuff to Trimble for AutoPilot purchases, altho if all you want to do is add guidance....(assuming your sprayer is autoTrac ready and has the GS2) running the JD system will Cost $8000 for the unlock code. Where as starting off from scratch with a AutoPilot starts at $5500 + an Insight display - Trimble Credit. (this is for electro-hydraulic)

I use the system I have now for palrallel tracking. Would like to be able to map and have autosteer. I'm not real concerned with 1" accuracy. I've been quoted a price for the steering wheel and auto steer on my keycard around $5800. Was just curios if anybody had any better ideas. Maybe using a laptop for my mapping monitor??? Didn't know it tremble's ez-steer or anything else out there would be compatible with the deere.

Sell the JD stuff you have and buy a EZ-Steer. The complete new EZ-Steer with T2 and EZ-Guide now sells for around $5500

I would seriously look at staying with Deere. If you already have some of the common components upgrading will be considerably cheaper. By far the cheapest way to satisfy your autosteer needs would be an ATU. We have three of them working with an SF2 signal and they have been operation flawlessly. We move them in everything from our 4960's, 8400's, 9400's, 8970's, to our four 9750sts. The only thing I would suggest is purchasing multiple wiring harnesses if you are planning on moving the units.

I would be the easiest but to buy the autotrac keycard, a atu I'm looking at the vivinity of $6500. And I still won't be able to see a visual map in the sprayer. Looks like I can start over and get everything for the same or less money.

Ok, first of all..there are a lot of options here. If your machine is AutoTrac Ready, you can add a mobile processor and a key card and autotrac for around $3500. If you are bumping up to a GS2, you're looking at dual displays, so the 8K range is relistic. The major advantage to a GS2 in your sprayer is you have easy access to swath control. This 2000 dollar investment will pay for itself faster than anything else in the precision market. Keep in mind though, this will work fine with a 4720, 4920, 4930, or 4830. If you have a 4710, it has to be above serial number 4000 or you will have to change the spray rate controller. That's about $750. Also, if you aren't Autotrac ready, an ATU is $3150 or the EH valve is about $4000 installed. Finally, keep in mind that direct command doesn't work that great on deere sprayers. It controls the voltages wrong and doesn't talk to the pump correctly. It works, but not as well as the integrated deere system. Look for used and start small. In the end, it's totally true that you get what you pay for.

I'm not sure what you're inferring. The Trimble/AL system DOES work w/the JD steering valves. We're using that setup on combine, no problem. However, I thought the original poster was referring to wiring etc.

If not-my apologies. Yes, Trimble/AL system DOES work w/JD steering valve just as well as it works w/Trimble valve. Absolutely NO problem!

Here's our JD valve, installed in JD combine that did NOT have valve, powered by AL/Insight/Trimble

I guess I should be more specific. Our sprayer is a '95 854 rogator. We just have the sf1 receiver and mobile processor. I just think jd $5800 is to much for the steering wheel and keycard. Figured somebody has to know some secret to get me autosteer reasonably priced. Thanks for everyone's time. Good time to think about this, it's awfully cold here in kansas.....

sounds like you are just looking for WAAS accuracy (you wanted to use your existing sf1) if you want the cheapest route:
sell what you already have. not sure what it would bring 2k??
buy a used ez-steer and ez-guide+ 4-5K i have one i would sell for 4k
if you are using that gs1 display in a combine or planter you obviously wouldnt want to sell it, so that changes things considerably.

The JD ATU is $3150. What is all included or needed in the balance of $2650? I coverage map out of my StarfireITC into an Ipaq running Trimble EZ-Map software for approx $1200. Need to run a couple of wires from the receiver to DB9 to hook to the receiver, like has been discussed here before. I bought a $100 ready made harness that pigtailed out of my receiver. If you have a laptop you might want to check out the "getting started with precision ag" post below. www.farmergps.com for an inexpensive alternative.

You got me, i muffed that wording BAD!! I was refering to aftermarket steering parts like the ez-steer or E-drive wouldn't run with the GS1. At least that is what i'm assuming he's after trying to dip under $5800. Geez, rereading what i wrote above! wow whatta goon!

To get the autosteer on my keycard makes up the balance to $5800.
The guy that had the used ez-steer earlier what would you want for it?

You could look at an Accutrak unit for the steering. It would be compatible with the JD gps unit and is relatively economic. www.accutrak.ca

Accutrak does work with the JD reciver. It's a full hydraulic system and will still use your same SF1 or 2 signal. Look at www.accutrak.ca

Accutrac is still going to be as high as the JD. I was hoping there would be somebody out there that has the same system I have, and were able to ad auto steer, By using a ez-steer, or outback e-drive, or whatever system.

The thing is almost all aftermarket systems require their lightbar to make their autosteer work. The one idea is to go with raven. You would have to purchase a RGL 600 lightbar and smarTrax and you could reuse your JD reciever. I am not completely sure if this way would work with trimble or Ag-leader but I know that with Outback you need to have their GPS reciever also. With raven you are looking at about $5200 with Smartrax and a 600ic lightbar. A complete system with an S2 and Edrive with special pricing is $6663 or a reman S and Edrive is $4999. If you have any other questions you can email me at [email protected]

Thanks for the info and time. We can't decide what to do. Keep what we have and get buy. Sure would be nice to have auto steer. My wife wounders why i'm so lazy that I can't keep ahold of the steering wheel and drive myself. Ha Ha

I would not recommend mixing JD and Raven. Last spring, I experimented with that exact setup. I had it in my 4720 sprayer. The Smarttrax communicates at a 10hz rate. The JD receiver is only capable of 5hz. It seemed to work okay until I got going over 12mph, then it wanted to wander around.
