western Massachusetts | Jd 4250 P/S MFWD Euro. Sorry in advance for the long post..
We have owned this tractor for probably 10yrs. Roughly 11k hrs. Started slipping a little in the top 2 gears a few years back. Not all the time, so wasn't overly concerned. Then one day out of blue, while backing up, it started making a grinding noise which appeared to come from the front end. If you revved the tractor up over 1500rpms, it would stop and all was well. At the end of the haying season last year, I lost all hydraulics out if the remotes, and the steering was kinda unresponsive. Pulled the pump, had it tested and it was fine. Checked the brakes, they were fine. Replaced the screens in the steering and the steering was back to normal. But I started having issues with a lot of the gears simply not working at times. My hydraulics were fine out of the back, as were the brakes and steering. But now the grinding almost popping noise was out of control. If you are going straight, no issues, as soon as you turn left or right it sounds terrible. I assumed it was the steering assembly, but before we dug into it, removed the driveline that powers the MFWD. No more grinding at all. So I ruled out the steering assembly.
I thought in my head that perhaps the solenoid wasn't engaging fully or disengaged fully leaving the tractor partially in 4wd. Solenoid is working, so we got into the secondary brake. Found a lot of the brake disks were bad and the shaft had a little scoring. Mind you, being a Euro tractor, it has a full air system with gladhands and a handbrake behind the seat. We have never used it for obvious reasons. So instead of replacing all the disc's and shaft and various other parts, we decided to simply eliminate the guts of the brake, and go without it. We put it all back together and the grinding is back no matter what we do. Also the filters that have less than 15hrs on them are plugged up with all sorts of chunks, and shavings and fibers. I'm completely at a loss at this point. Local dealer had mentioned maybe a pinion gear and bearing in the rear-end may be bad, evidently thats how the mfwd is powered. Anyone have any inclination of what is going on? Again, sorry for the extremely long post. | |
